The Department of Cell Biology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers graduate students in the biomedical sciences who participate in Einstein’s Ph.D. program or dual M.D./Ph.D. program the opportunity to pursue a concentration in cell biology. We bring together diverse investigators to provide a comprehensive program focused on training students in the broad interdisciplinary field of cell biology and to prepare the next generation of scientific leaders in cell biology, molecular biology, and genetics.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine has many cell biology research themes and topics for graduate students to explore, including genome function and stability (how the genome is maintained, expressed, and regulated); cellular function and dynamics (subcellular organelles and compartments, cell metabolism, and migration); and cell growth and differentiation (signaling, communication, cell cycle, and cancer). We aim to develop a diverse pool of well-trained scientists through high-quality research training and mentored research experiences.
Concentration in Cell Biology
Graduate students must fulfill all academic requirements for the Ph.D. program or dual M.D./Ph.D. program, along with specific course recommendations to earn a concentration in cell biology.
Recommended Graduate Courses for Cell Biology
---
Biochemistry
Molecular Genetics
Gene Expression: Beyond the Double Helix
Molecular Cell Biology
Stem Cells, Development, and Disease
Credits earned count towards satisfying your course credit requirements for the Ph.D. degree or dual M.D./Ph.D. degree. You are encouraged to take additional courses that are relevant to your research interests.
Academic Activities
Graduate students concentrating in cell biology participate in a variety of departmental activities, including presenting and discussing original research articles as part of the Cell Biology Journal Club, and describing the progress of current research and discussing future directions in the Cell Biology Work-In-Progress (WIP) Seminar Series.
The Department of Cell Biology also hosts a seminar series featuring invited speakers from outside institutions, where Einstein students and postdocs have a chance to meet and discuss current topics in the field of cell biology with distinguished scientists. Graduate students concentrating in cell biology are strongly encouraged to attend the Cell Biology Annual Retreat.
