Human genetics is the centerpiece of translational research. The main goal is to identify DNA sequence or copy number variation and epigenomic alterations that alter risk to common human diseases. The first step requires recruitment of human subjects from our local hospitals including Montefiore Medical Center and Jacobi Hospital. This will be followed by molecular genetic studies identifying disease related genes.
Once genes or molecular mechanisms are identified, novel lab diagnostics will be set up and validated in the research lab. Application of genetic testing in the clinic will provide a diagnosis for families. This will provide their clinicians the tools to advise families both in regards to prenatal diagnostics and for the latest care of individuals with the particular disorder. Novel clinical lab findings can be translated back to the research arena. Human cohort research combined with studies in animal models and back again provide a complete circle for improving health care.
