Professional Interests

The focus of my research is the translation of basic research concerning neuronal electrical activity into practical solutions that confer neuroprotection. Understanding mechanisms by which neurons survive within the penumbra following interventions in cell-cell communication, modulation of systemic and focal brain temperature, and modulation of abnormal electrical activity (i.e., electrographic seizures and waves of spreading depression) – which are key components in adverse outcomes for neurological patients – allows us to develop new therapeutic tools for the treatment of asphyxic, ischemic and traumatic brain injuries in both hospital and out-of-hospital settings, providing a blue-print for development of biotechnological solutions to benefit community health
