Professional Interests
Seymour Solomon was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1924 and received his primary and secondary education there. After graduating from Marquette University School of Medicine (now the Medical College of Wisconsin), he trained in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee. He completed a residency in neurology at Montefiore Hospital in New York and then became Director of Neurology at Philadelphia General Hospital. Following two years as Captain in the Air Force he returned to Montefiore as Associate Chief of Neurology. The remainder of his career was at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in various roles. He was Director of EEG, acting chief of the department, and Vice Chairman of Neurology. Dr. Solomon was appointed Director of the Montefiore Headache Unit (now Headache Center) and spent almost three decades on patient care, teaching fellows, research and clinical trials. Although he formally retired in 2009 he continued to write and engage part time in patient care until 2020, age 95.
Dr. Solomon had faculty appointments at Temple University and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is Professor (now Emeritus) of Neurology at Einstein . Dr. Solomon held many positions in the American Headache Society®, including President, and Chairman of the American Council for Headache Education. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, Fellow of the American Neurological Association, Fellow and Regent of the American Headache Society®. Of the other organizations, he was particularly active in the International Headache Society. Among Dr. Solomon’s awards are those from the National Headache Foundation, the American Council for Headache Education, the American Headache Society® (Lifetime Achievement Award) and the Staff and Alumni Association of Montefiore (Physician Honoree of “Montefiore 2000”).
Selected Publications
Dr. Solomon has written more than 250 scientific papers. . He initiated and was abstracts editor of the journal Headache. Dr. Solomon wrote the neurology chapters in the early editions of the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry. He is the author of The Headache Book for the lay population. Most of his publications are in the field of headache and lastly about the placebo .
