Dr. Yassari earned his medical degree from the Vienna School of Medicine in Austria and a Master of Science in Experimental Pathology from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center and was a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Subsequently he was an instructor at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Spinal Oncology and Reconstructive and Complex Spine with the Dept. of Neurosurgery. Dr. Yassari specializes in the treatment of complex degenerative, traumatic and neoplastic spine diseases, including intrinsic extradural, intradural and intramedullary spinal cord tumors as well as metastatic spine tumors. Dr. Yassari;s clinical focus is in spinal oncology in collaboration with the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care and the Department of Radiation Oncology. He combines his training in minimally invasive surgery and spinal oncology with the existing infrastructure for advanced intraoperative image guidance technology at Montefiore Medical Center to offer innovative, cutting-edge surgical treatment options to patients with all aspects of spine pathologies, in particular metastatic spine disease.

Biography

Dr. Yassari earned his medical degree in 1997 from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria with a dissertation in neuropathology. He completed his basic surgical training (1997-1998) in England at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in Norwich, East Anglia, before relocating to the United States, where he received a master of science degree in experimental pathology at the University of Chicago. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Chicago Hospital and was a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Subsequently, he underwent fellowship training in spinal oncology and reconstructive and complex spine surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was an instructor in neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery. He started his tenure as Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2010 and rose through the academic ranks to become Professor of Neurological Surgery in 2018. In 2012, Dr. Yassari was designated as Associate Program Director and then in 2014 as the Program Director of the Neurological Surgery Residency Program. He is a founding member and the Director of Surgical Services for the Montefiore Spine Center, a multidisciplinary center for the treatment of patients with spinal disease. In addition, he is a faculty member at our Albert Einstein Global Health Center and leads an annual neurosurgical mission to Mongolia. Dr. Yassari is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, AOSpine, the American Medical Association and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Saikiran Murthy, DO, is a neurosurgeon and Assistant Professor, Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurosurgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Murthy specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders including chronic back pain, degenerative disk disease, spinal trauma, spinal tumors, cervical myelopathy, spondylotic arthropathy, spondylolisthesis and thoracolumbar deformity. His clinical interests also include robotic spinal surgery, computer navigation assisted spinal surgery and general neurosurgery.Dr. Murthy brings a unique background as he is dually trained in neurology and neurosurgery. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2001 at New York University, he attended Boston University School of Medicine, earning his Master of Arts in medical sciences in 2005. He then attended New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2009. Dr. Murthy’s postdoctoral training began at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, Cornell University with a yearlong internship. From 2010 to 2013 he completed a neurology residency at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University. Following this, he pursued a neurological surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers University completing it in 2018. During this time, he also completed a fellowship in endoscopic skull-base neurosurgery at Weill Cornell College of Medicine. In 2019, he completed a CAST accredited, AO-Spine fellowship in complex spinal neurosurgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center.The focus of Dr. Murthy’s research is comparative effective research in spinal neurosurgery. His work has been shared in posters, presentations and peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Murthy is board certified in neurological surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He is an affiliate member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, a member of AO Spine North America, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Yaroslav (Jacob) Gelfand, MD, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Gelfand’s clinical specialty is in the use of minimally invasive approaches to diagnose and treat a wide variety of spine pathologies and problems. With extensive training in both minimally invasive and complex spine surgery, Dr. Gelfand offers the latest treatment options to patients, using cutting-edge technology including intraoperative image guidance, fluoroscopy, endoscopy and pre-operative computer planning.After completing his Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering at University of California, Davis, Dr. Gelfand studied his Doctor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, earning the degree in 2013. His time at Weill Cornell included a yearlong Howard Hughes Medical Fellowship at the institution’s neurobiology and behavioral science lab. From 2013 to 2018, Dr. Gelfand pursued a residency in neurosurgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He then completed a research fellowship at Columbia University as well as a nonclinical research fellowship with Globus Medical's Musculoskeletal Education and Research Center in 2019, before returning to be chief resident at Einstein’s Department of Neurological Surgery from 2019 to 2020. In 2021, Dr. Gelfand completed his yearlong minimally invasive and complex spine surgery fellowship at the University of California’s Los Angeles Spine Center.Dr. Gelfand’s research focuses on the latest spine technology, surgical techniques and patient outcomes. He has authored and co-authored over 35 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters along with many more abstracts and presentations.
