<p class="MsoNormal">My laboratory and clinical research are focusing on novel agents in acute myeloid leukemia. The main area of active investigations is attacking apoptotic machinery of leukemia cells by depriving them from key pro-survival inputs by targeting BCL-2, BCL-XL, Mcl-1 by small molecule inhibitors and degraders. We continue studies characterizing mechanisms of resistance to BCL-2 inhibition and identifying novel combinatorial strategies with immune therapies and signaling inhibitors. My lab is interested in studying the biology and therapeutic targeting of leukemia-initiating cells, with novel multi-targeted bispecific T- or NK-engagers, antibody-drug conjugates and CART cells. We further aim at identifying key targets in maintenance and eradication of minimal residual disease (MRD) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We have studied metabolic states in AML and T-ALL and utilized novel metabolic inhibitors to selectively deprive tumor metabolism, such as glutaminase, OxPhos and fatty acid metabolic inhibitors. Finally, we are interested in understanding the biology and targeting of an aggressive hematologic malignancy Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic ell neoplasm (BPDCN), through targeting BCL-2, CD123 and novel cell surface targets with small molecules, antibodies and CART cells. Most robust pre-clinical discoveries have translated into clinical trials, such as venetoclax, metabolic inhibitors and immune modulators.</p>

<p>Marina Konopleva, MD, Phd, is Professor, Oncology, Professor, Molecular Pharmacology, Director, Leukemia Program and Co-Director, Blood Cancer Institute, at Montefiore Einstein. Her clinic focus centers on treating patients with hematologic malignancies, with an emphasis on acute myeloid and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She has additional expertise in treating patients with high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome and chronic myeloid leukemia.</p><p>After obtaining her Doctor of Medicine in 1990 from First Pavlov Medical Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, Dr. Konopleva completed her postgraduate training in internal medicine at I.P. Pavlov State Medical Institute in 1993. In 1998 she obtained her PhD in experimental hematology from the Federal Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion as well as her postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Hematology with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.</p><p>Dr. Konopleva conducts laboratory research focusing on approaches activating cell death, metabolic inhibitors and immune-oncology in AML. Her key contributions include the identification of dependency of AML cells on the anti-apoptotic protein BCL-2 and the FDA approval of the BCL-2 inhibitor venetoclax in combination with low-intensity chemotherapy in elderly patients unfit for standard chemotherapy. This therapy provides both low toxicity for elderly patients with AML and documented survival benefit. Dr. Konopleva&rsquo;s ground-breaking research greatly benefited leukemia research, clinical research and the lives of patients. She is a scholar of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and her research is funded by the NIH, Department of Defense and various private foundations. Her work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and she has presented both nationally and internationally.</p><p>Dr. Konopleva is board certified by the Russian Board of Hematology, the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine - Hematology. She is a member of numerous professional societies including the American Society of Hematology, the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Society of Hematologic Oncology.</p><p>Dr. Konopleva has won many awards for her work, such as the R. Lee Clark Prize - Basic/Translational Science and the Students' Faculty Choice Award from MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2019, the Otis W. and Pearl L. Walters Faculty Achievement Award in Clinical Research from MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2020 and the Mentor of the Year award from the Division of Cancer Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2022.</p>

<p>Xiao P. Peng, MD, PhD, is Director of the Genetics of Blood and Immunity Clinic and Co-Director of the New York Center for Rare Diseases at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Genetics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Peng cares for patients with complex, undiagnosed disorders, with unique and specific expertise in the diagnosis and care of genetically-driven disorders of blood and immunity (GBIs). She integrates the tools of molecular medicine and the conceptual understanding of human genetics and pathobiological mechanisms to identify novel disease-causing mechanisms and strategies for helping patients.</p><p>After receiving her Bachelor of Science in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology in 2005, Dr. Peng earned her Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology at Sloan Kettering Institute in 2015 and her Doctor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College in 2017. She then completed a pediatrics-medical genetics combined residency at Johns Hopkins University in 2021 and served an additional year as both Chief Resident and a Research Fellow. During her residency and fellowship, she also worked as a geneticist for the Genetics and Genomics Unit at the Center for Chronic Immunodeficiency, University of Freiburg, Germany.</p><p>Dr. Peng&rsquo;s research focuses on the nexus of genome maintenance, transcriptional gene regulation and post-translational modifications. She is greatly interested in host-pathogen co-evolution, or how interactions with our fellow species, particularly microbes, have shaped human genomes and human history. She has been principal investigator and co-investigator on a number of funded research projects and contributed her time to many initiatives that advance the goals of the GBI community at large. Her work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, case reports, book chapters, monographs, reviews and abstracts, and she has given many invited presentations. She serves in several groups within the ClinGen Immunology CDWG and as a reviewer for <em>Genetics in Medicine, Clinical Immunology, Frontiers in Immunology</em> and the <em>Journal of Clinical Immunology</em>.</p><p>Dr. Peng is board certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics in Clinical Genetics and Genomics and the American Board of Pediatrics in General Pediatrics. She holds multiple leadership roles in the North American Immuno-Hematology Clinical Education & Research (NICER) Consortium. She serves as Geneticist for the Johns Hopkins Ataxia Telangiectasia Clinic and the Genetic Disorders of Mucociliary Clearance Consortium and Related Research Network. She is also an active member of the Clinical Immunological Society (CIS) and the European Society of Human Genetics.</p>

<p>Dr. Bahar Laderian is the Director of the Neuroendocrine Tumors Program at the Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical expertise encompasses the treatment of neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoids), neuroendocrine carcinomas, pheochromocytomas, paragangliomas, and various gastrointestinal cancers, such as colorectal, appendiceal, intestinal, anal, pancreatic, hepatocellular, cholangiocarcinoma, and gastroesophageal cancers.</p>
<p>Dr. Laderian earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital. She pursued her hematology/oncology fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center-NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.</p>
<p>Dr. Laderian focuses on developing innovative treatments for neuroendocrine neoplasms, pheochromocytomas, paragangliomas, and gastrointestinal cancers. She collaborates with basic scientists to identify novel genomic alterations, aiming to discover new biomarkers that could predict severe side effects from cancer treatments. Her research also examines potential disparities in clinical outcomes and treatment responses among patients with rare cancers. Additionally, she explores the impact of genetics on health outcomes through human population genetics studies. Dr. Laderian has authored and co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed cancer journals and the Journal of Internal Medicine, and she has presented her findings at national and international conferences. <p>Dr Piccinini brings an extensive international experience in aesthetic plastic surgery, including face and necklift, rhinoplasty, breast and body contouring, facial and body fat grafting, combining the best of American and Brazilian plastic surgery practices. Fellowship-trained in aesthetic facial and adult and pediatric craniofacial surgery - Nicklaus Miami Children's Hospital under Dr Anthony Wolfe. University of Pennsylvania Breast and Microsurgery fellowship-trained including DIEP flaps and other perforator flaps for complex reconstruction. Dr Piccinini has co-authored multiple book chapters on facial rejuvenation, craniofacial surgery and body contouring. He has had work published in the main plastic surgery journals, including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Surgery Journal. He has a special interest in minimally invasive, endoscopic approaches to facial surgery including trauma and facial rejuvenation.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>Pedro Salomao Piccinini, MD, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Piccinini brings an international perspective to aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, integrating American and Brazilian plastic surgery practices. He has a special focus on endoscopic approaches to facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, minimizing visible incisions, as well as improving the facial profile through deep plane face and neck lifts, rhinoplasty, bone contouring and fat grafting to the face, body and breast.</p><p>After earning his Doctor of Medicine from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2009, Dr. Piccinini underwent general surgery residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2014. He then completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery clinical and research fellowship at the Hospital S&atilde;o Lucas of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) and the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery in Porto Alegre in 2016. Dr. Piccinini remained here to complete his plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship in 2019. He then moved to the United States to continue his medical training, completing a craniofacial plastic surgery fellowship at Nicklaus Children&rsquo;s Hospital (Miami Children&rsquo;s Hospital) in 2021, followed by a microvascular reconstructive surgery fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in 2023.</p><p>Dr. Piccinini&rsquo;s research focuses on regenerative fat grafting, the effects of neck lift surgery on sleep apnea, breast implant stabilization for reconstructive and cosmetic purposes, postoperative wound healing and the use of virtual surgical planning for complex facial reconstruction in children and adults. He has co-authored multiple book chapters on facial rejuvenation, craniofacial surgery and body contouring, and his work has been published in prestigious plastic surgery journals, including <em>Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery</em> and the <em>Aesthetic Surgery Journal</em>. He has also presented at national and international medical conferences and is an Associate Editor for <em>Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Global Open</em>, as well as a reviewer for the <em>Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery</em> and <em>Gland Surgery</em>, among others.</p><p>Dr. Piccinini is board certified by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and the Brazilian Medical Association. He is a fellow member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Craniofacial Surgery. He is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese.</p>

<p>David Levitz, MD, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Levitz&rsquo;s clinical focus is in classical hematology, diagnosing and treating a diverse range of disorders such as sickle cell disease, thrombosis, anemias, bleeding disorders, hemoglobin disorders, thalassemia, autoimmune hematologic diseases, and other rare diseases. He also has interests in phase I clinical trial drug development.</p><p>After receiving his Bachelor of Science at University of Connecticut in 2013, Dr. Levitz came to Einstein to obtain his Doctor of Medicine, earning it in 2017. He pursued postgraduate training at Tufts Medical Center, completing his internal medicine residency in 2020. Dr. Levitz then returned to Montefiore to complete his hematology/oncology fellowship, taking on the role of Chief Fellow in his final year.</p><p>Dr. Levitz&rsquo;s research focus is in translational drug development for solid oncology and malignant hematology. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals and poster presentations.</p><p>Dr. Levitz is board certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology and Oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.</p>

<p>Fernand Bteich, MD, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor, Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical focus centers on gastrointestinal malignancies, hepatobiliary cancers, colorectal cancer and clinical trials.</p><p>After earning his Medical Doctorate at Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon in 2015, Dr. Bteich completed his internship at H&ocirc;teI-Dieu de France Hospital in Beirut in 2017. Following this, he completed his internal medicine residency at Saint Louis University in 2020 before completing a hematology-oncology fellowship at Montefiore Einstein in 2023.</p><p>Dr. Bteich&rsquo;s research focuses on hepatobiliary cancers, retrospective outcomes and clinical trials. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and he has presented nationally and internationally.</p><p>Dr. Bteich is board certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates. He is fluent in English, Arabic and French.</p>

<p>William Skinner, MD, is an attending physician and Associate Professor at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Skinner&rsquo;s clinical focus is in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer, lung cancer and radiation immune reactions.</p><p>In 1996, Dr. Skinner completed his Bachelor of Science in biology at the U.S. Air Force Academy. He then attended the University of Virginia, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2000. Dr. Skinner completed his postdoctoral training in radiation oncology at Montefiore Medical Center from 2006 to 2010.</p><p>Dr. Skinner&rsquo;s research focuses on the mitigation and prevention of radiation-induced injury and the interaction of radiation and the immune system. His research has been shared through peer-reviewed journals, oral presentations and poster presentations.</p><p>Dr. Skinner is a Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology. He is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the Radiation Research Society and the American Brachytherapy Society.</p>

Her clinical focus is in the treatment of colorectal cancer and gastrointestinal malignancies.</p><p>After earning her Doctor of Medicine at Universidad Cat&oacute;lica Santiago de Guayaquil in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 2010, Dr. Bernabe completed her internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2016. She then completed a hematology/medical oncology fellowship at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell in 2019.</p><p>Dr. Bernabe&rsquo;s research focuses on contributing and improving cancer care for patients in the U.S. and Latin America. Her work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed original research publications, invited editorials, articles, abstracts and poster presentations. She is also a reviewer for <em>Supportive Care in Cancer</em> and has given multiple oral presentations.</p><p>Dr. Bernabe is board certified in internal medicine, hematology and oncology. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the ASCO Health Equity & Outcomes Committee. Dr. Bernabe is fluent in Spanish and English.</p>

<p>Dima Raskolnikov, MD, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor, Urology at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Raskolnikov specializes in minimally invasive surgery with a focus on complex kidney stone disease, robotic urinary tract reconstruction and kidney cancer.</p><p>In 2009, Dr. Raskolnikov graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and society. He then pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree at Downstate College of Medicine, State University of New York (SUNY Downstate). During this time, he also completed a research fellowship with the Urologic Oncology Branch of the National Cancer Institute, NIH, from 2013 to 2014, graduating from SUNY Downstate with his MD with distinction in research in 2015. His postgraduate training took him to University of Washington, where he completed an internship in general surgery in 2016, a residency in urology in 2021 and a fellowship in endourology and minimally invasive surgery in 2022.</p><p>Dr. Raskolnikov&rsquo;s research focuses on quality improvement programs that make urological care more effective and efficient.
