Dr. Yassari earned his medical degree from the Vienna School of Medicine in Austria and a Master of Science in Experimental Pathology from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center and was a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Subsequently he was an instructor at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Spinal Oncology and Reconstructive and Complex Spine with the Dept. of Neurosurgery. Dr. Yassari specializes in the treatment of complex degenerative, traumatic and neoplastic spine diseases, including intrinsic extradural, intradural and intramedullary spinal cord tumors as well as metastatic spine tumors. Dr. Yassari;s clinical focus is in spinal oncology in collaboration with the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care and the Department of Radiation Oncology. He combines his training in minimally invasive surgery and spinal oncology with the existing infrastructure for advanced intraoperative image guidance technology at Montefiore Medical Center to offer innovative, cutting-edge surgical treatment options to patients with all aspects of spine pathologies, in particular metastatic spine disease.

Biography

Dr. Yassari earned his medical degree in 1997 from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria with a dissertation in neuropathology. He completed his basic surgical training (1997-1998) in England at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in Norwich, East Anglia, before relocating to the United States, where he received a master of science degree in experimental pathology at the University of Chicago. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Chicago Hospital and was a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Subsequently, he underwent fellowship training in spinal oncology and reconstructive and complex spine surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was an instructor in neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery. He started his tenure as Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2010 and rose through the academic ranks to become Professor of Neurological Surgery in 2018. In 2012, Dr. Yassari was designated as Associate Program Director and then in 2014 as the Program Director of the Neurological Surgery Residency Program. He is a founding member and the Director of Surgical Services for the Montefiore Spine Center, a multidisciplinary center for the treatment of patients with spinal disease. In addition, he is a faculty member at our Albert Einstein Global Health Center and leads an annual neurosurgical mission to Mongolia. Dr. Yassari is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, AOSpine, the American Medical Association and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Ivy Tam, MD, FAAP, is an Attending Physician and a Non-neonatal Emergency Transport Coordinator at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She is also an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Tam received her Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences at Cornell University. She then attended SUNY Upstate Medical University, where she received her Doctor of Medicine in 2013. Dr. Tam began her postgraduate training with a residency in pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in pediatric hospital medicine in 2018 at the University of California San Diego. Saikiran Murthy, DO, is a neurosurgeon and Assistant Professor, Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurosurgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Murthy specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders including chronic back pain, degenerative disk disease, spinal trauma, spinal tumors, cervical myelopathy, spondylotic arthropathy, spondylolisthesis and thoracolumbar deformity. His clinical interests also include robotic spinal surgery, computer navigation assisted spinal surgery and general neurosurgery.Dr. Murthy brings a unique background as he is dually trained in neurology and neurosurgery. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2001 at New York University, he attended Boston University School of Medicine, earning his Master of Arts in medical sciences in 2005. He then attended New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2009. Dr. Murthy’s postdoctoral training began at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, Cornell University with a yearlong internship. From 2010 to 2013 he completed a neurology residency at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University. Following this, he pursued a neurological surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers University completing it in 2018. During this time, he also completed a fellowship in endoscopic skull-base neurosurgery at Weill Cornell College of Medicine. In 2019, he completed a CAST accredited, AO-Spine fellowship in complex spinal neurosurgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center.The focus of Dr. Murthy’s research is comparative effective research in spinal neurosurgery. His work has been shared in posters, presentations and peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Murthy is board certified in neurological surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. She is a co-investigator in a grant funded project investigating communication with hospitalized patients with limited English proficiency, and her body of research includes quality improvement research studies focused on improving inpatient pediatric comfort and decreasing painful experiences. John McGinley, PhD, FAES, is Director, Neuropsychology, Comprehensive Epilepsy Management Center at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. McGinley's clinical focus includes the presurgical neuropsychological assessment of adults and children with epilepsy, the multidisciplinary administration of the Wada procedure and the facilitation of intraoperative language mapping. He also performs presurgical neuropsychological evaluations of patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, such as dystonia and essential tremor to assist with the determination of deep brain stimulation (DBS) suitability. Dr. McGinley also conducts brief neuropsychological evaluations for the assessment of dementia at the Center for the Aging Brain (CAB) as part of a multidisciplinary team of Neurologists, Geriatricians and Neuropsychologists.After he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Saint Peter's College in 1989, Dr. McGinley earned his Master of Science in applied psychology with a research concentration from the Stevens Institute of Technology in 1992. He earned his Master of Social Work at the City University of New York in 1996 and combined his clinical and research interests through the attainment of a scientist-practitioner Doctor of Philosophy in clinical health psychology at Yeshiva University. in 2001. Dr. McGinley completed his psychology internship at St. Charles Hospital & Rehabilitation Center in 2001, with postdoctoral training in pediatric neuropsychology at private practices in Long Island and New Jersey in 2007.Dr. McGinley’s research focuses on epilepsy surgery outcomes, the impact of deep brain stimulation, the identification of biomarkers for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), shared cognitive pathways in epilepsy and autism and the impact of medications on neurological diseases such as systemic lupus. Dr. McGinley is a co-investigator for the Montefiore Einstein research project, “Effects of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) on Cognitive and Emotional Behaviors,” and is a collaborator on another project titled “Vocal Biomarker Discovery for Mild Cognitive Impairment Detection.” He is also the developer of a modified Wada procedure for “standard-of-care” presurgical epilepsy assessment in persons with early-onset visual impairment/blindness (VI/B). His work has been shared through numerous peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations.Dr. McGinley is a Licensed Psychologist and a Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society (FAES) and currently serves as a member of the AES Annual Conference’s Pediatric Content Committee. He is also a member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN) and the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). In 2016, Dr. McGinley was selected to attend the inaugural “International Training Course on Neuropsychology in Epilepsy” at Château de Rosay, France, sponsored by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE).
