Professional Interests

Mitchell S. Fourman, MD M.Phil is an attending physician and Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Fourman’s clinical focus is the spine, with particular interests in adult spinal deformity, adult degenerative spine pathology, metastatic cancer to the spine and primary spine tumors. 
Dr. Fourman earned his Bachelor of Science at Stony Brook University in 2008, where he was a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar and a SUNY Chancellor’s Award winner. Dr. Fourman attended the University of Cambridge to earn a Masters of Philosophy in Sociology in 2009 prior to completing his Doctor of Medicine with Distinction in Research and the Humanities in 2014 at Stony Brook University. Dr. Fourman pursued his postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, completing an internship in general surgery in 2015 followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery in 2020. He then went on to complete a clinical fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology at Harvard in 2021 followed by a clinical fellowship in Adult Spine and Scoliosis Surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in 2022 under Drs. Todd Albert, Han Jo Kim and Sheeraz Qureshi. 
Dr. Fourman’s research focuses include the impact of socioeconomic disparities on surgical outcomes, the management of metastatic spine disease, the implementation of value-based orthopaedic care and the use of near-infrared fluorescence imaging to identify areas of spinal nerve compression. He also studies multiple aspects of adult spinal deformity in collaboration with the International Spine Study Group (ISSG). He has won several awards for his research, including the Philip D. Wilson Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery Research while a fellow at Hospital for Special Surgery.

Mitchell S. Fourman, MD M.Phil is an attending physician and Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Fourman’s clinical focus is the spine, with particular interests in adult spinal deformity, adult degenerative spine pathology, metastatic cancer to the spine, primary spine tumors, Scheuermann's kyphosis, congenital spine deformity, complex cervical, thoracic and lumbar revision surgeries, lumbar disc herniation, cervical spine herniation, and cervical and thoracic myelopathy and radiculopathy.

Biography

Mauricio Drummond Jr., MD, is an attending surgeon and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics and Orthopedic Surgery at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. Dr. Drummond’s clinical focus is in pediatric sports medicine with a special focus on knee pathology. His interests include pediatric orthopedic surgery, complex pediatric and adolescent sports medicine, ACL, PCL and multiligament knee injuries, discoid meniscus, meniscus transplantation, patellofemoral instability, trochlear dysplasia, cartilage preservation and pediatric trauma and limb deformities.In 1996, Dr. Drummond earned his Doctor of Medicine from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He completed his residency training at the same institution, and practiced as a knee specialist for more than 13 years in Brazil. In 2018, he came to the United States, completing an orthopedic surgery research fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2019 and an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2020. He continued his postdoctoral training, completing his pediatric orthopedics and limb deformity fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in 2021 and his pediatric orthopedics fellowship at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in 2022.Dr. Drummond’s research interests include discoid meniscus, trochlear dysplasia, patellofemoral instability and ACL tears. He has shared his work nationally and internationally through peer-reviewed journals and podium and poster presentations. Dr. Yassari earned his medical degree from the Vienna School of Medicine in Austria and a Master of Science in Experimental Pathology from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency in Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago Medical Center and was a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Subsequently he was an instructor at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Spinal Oncology and Reconstructive and Complex Spine with the Dept. of Neurosurgery. Dr. Yassari specializes in the treatment of complex degenerative, traumatic and neoplastic spine diseases, including intrinsic extradural, intradural and intramedullary spinal cord tumors as well as metastatic spine tumors. Dr. Yassari;s clinical focus is in spinal oncology in collaboration with the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care and the Department of Radiation Oncology. He combines his training in minimally invasive surgery and spinal oncology with the existing infrastructure for advanced intraoperative image guidance technology at Montefiore Medical Center to offer innovative, cutting-edge surgical treatment options to patients with all aspects of spine pathologies, in particular metastatic spine disease.

Biography

Dr. Yassari earned his medical degree in 1997 from the Medical University of Vienna in Austria with a dissertation in neuropathology. He completed his basic surgical training (1997-1998) in England at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in Norwich, East Anglia, before relocating to the United States, where he received a master of science degree in experimental pathology at the University of Chicago. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Chicago Hospital and was a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics. Subsequently, he underwent fellowship training in spinal oncology and reconstructive and complex spine surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was an instructor in neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery. He started his tenure as Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2010 and rose through the academic ranks to become Professor of Neurological Surgery in 2018. In 2012, Dr. Yassari was designated as Associate Program Director and then in 2014 as the Program Director of the Neurological Surgery Residency Program. He is a founding member and the Director of Surgical Services for the Montefiore Spine Center, a multidisciplinary center for the treatment of patients with spinal disease. In addition, he is a faculty member at our Albert Einstein Global Health Center and leads an annual neurosurgical mission to Mongolia. Dr. Yassari is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, AOSpine, the American Medical Association and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Yang earned his medical degree at Beijing Medical University in China followed by an orthopaedic residency at Peking University People’s Hospital in Beijing, China.  Following his training in China, he came to the United States where he earned a Master’s degree in Biological Sciences from Hunter College at the City University of New York. Dr. Yang completed a second orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Texas, in Houston and then he did a fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Yang specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors in the musculoskeletal system. A multidisciplinary approach is emphasized in his practice. He performs surgery to remove the tumor fom the limb and pelvis, and rebuild them using techniques tailored for each individual patient. Dr. Yang is also interested in treating metastatic bony lesions originating from other parts of the body.
Dr. Yang has a strong interest in the research of musculoskeletal tumors. He has been studying the tumorigenesis of osteosarcoma and the genetic profile of the tumors as comparison to its normal counterpart tissues.  He has also studied the mechanism of chemotherapy resistance in osteosarcoma and related signaling pathways, as well as novel strategies to overcome it in collaboration with the pediatric sarcoma teams.

Melinda S. Sharkey, MD, is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Montefiore. She specializes in the operative and nonoperative treatment of general pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal problems, including traumatic injuries, as well as congenital and developmental disorders. Biography

Jacob F. Schulz, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who provides comprehensive pediatric orthopedic care with an emphasis on spinal deformity, neuromuscular disease and trauma. He has a particular interest in the growing spine, with experience using the vertical expandable titanium rib (VEPTR) device and vertebral tethering through a thoracoscopic approach. At our Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery.He served both his internship and residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia where he was honored with the Frank Hammond Sivitz and Chief Resident Teaching Awards in 2011. During his residency, he traveled to Neustadt, Germany to study spine deformity at the Schoen Clinic, and to San Pedro Sula in Honduras to help CURE International provide world class orthopedic care to children. Dr. Schulz completed his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, ranked second by U.S. News & World Report in 2012.Dr. Schulz’s research has been published in The Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics (JPO) and presented at several national meetings. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA).

Saikiran Murthy, DO, is a neurosurgeon and Assistant Professor, Leo M. Davidoff Department of Neurosurgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Murthy specializes in the surgical treatment of spinal disorders including chronic back pain, degenerative disk disease, spinal trauma, spinal tumors, cervical myelopathy, spondylotic arthropathy, spondylolisthesis and thoracolumbar deformity. His clinical interests also include robotic spinal surgery, computer navigation assisted spinal surgery and general neurosurgery.Dr. Murthy brings a unique background as he is dually trained in neurology and neurosurgery. After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2001 at New York University, he attended Boston University School of Medicine, earning his Master of Arts in medical sciences in 2005. He then attended New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree in 2009. Dr. Murthy’s postdoctoral training began at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, Cornell University with a yearlong internship. From 2010 to 2013 he completed a neurology residency at Rhode Island Hospital, Brown University. Following this, he pursued a neurological surgery residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health, Rutgers University completing it in 2018. During this time, he also completed a fellowship in endoscopic skull-base neurosurgery at Weill Cornell College of Medicine. In 2019, he completed a CAST accredited, AO-Spine fellowship in complex spinal neurosurgery at the University of Virginia Medical Center.The focus of Dr. Murthy’s research is comparative effective research in spinal neurosurgery. His work has been shared in posters, presentations and peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Murthy is board certified in neurological surgery by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery. He is an affiliate member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, a member of AO Spine North America, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Biography

Paul E. Levin, MD, joined Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2004 and is the Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedics as well as the Director of the Department of Orthopedics, Moses Campus. At Einstein, he serves as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a board-certified orthopedic specialist with expertise in general orthopedics, the nonoperative management of musculoskeletal conditions, fracture surgery and complications of fractures. He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1980 and completed his orthopedic residency at Montefiore in 1985. He subsequently completed a fellowship in orthopedic traumatology at the University of Texas and a second fellowship in fracture care at the Kantosspital in Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Levin teaches classes in bioethics and a course in Patients, Doctors and Communities, both of which focus on collaboration among patients and professionals regarding healthcare delivery. Known for exploring treatment options with his patients along with the desire to identify a strategy for successful care without surgical intervention, he has been called on to lecture on patient-clinician communication and surgical safety. Dr. Levin is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and chairman of the organization's Committee on Ethics and Lectures.
