We have 23 categorical and 3 preliminary openings each year (there are an additional 5 one-year interns who are categorical residents in the Montefiore PM&R residency).
All applications must be submitted via ERAS and should include at least 3 letters of recommendation. for the current ERAS® cycle, our program will be participating in the supplemental ERAS application offered through the AAMC's ERAS program. Applicants must have complete ERAS applications to be considered for interview.
In the NRMP system, our programs are listed as Montefiore Medical Center/Einstein-NY, Internal Medicine/Wakefield.
Is application signaling required?
Our program uses signals to prioritize review of applications. Applications with a gold signal will be reviewed first, followed by the silver signal. Application review will not be limited to those which have signaled our program and signaling does not guarantee an interview. Many of our interns who matched last year did not signal our program. Signaling has no impact on our rank list.
Do you accept International Medical Graduates into your program?
We will consider all qualified candidates including U.S. M.D. or D.O. graduates, U.S. international medical graduates and international medical graduates.
Do you accept D.O.s into your program?
Yes. We will consider all qualified D.O. candidates. COMLEX 1 is required and COMLEX 2 scores strongly preferred. We will also consider USMLE scores.
Is ECFMG Certification necessary?
For all international medical graduates, ECFMG certification is required before starting the residency, preferably by March 1 of the year you are applying.
Do you accept candidates on visas?
Yes, both J1 and H1b visas; note that an H-1B requires a passing score on USMLE Step 3 by December 31.
Montefiore will sponsor H-1B visas for eligible International Medical Graduates (IMGs), who are Non-US citizens. These are the eligibility requirements for sponsorship of an H-1B visa.
- Acceptance to a categorical residency program or a training program of at least 2 years in length.
- Proof of completion of USMLE Step 3 and certification by NRMP Match date (i.e., FMGs only).
- Proof of ECFMG certification (i.e., Not required for Canadian medical school graduates).
What is the minimum USMLE score you accept?
There is no strict cut-off but generally, average intern scores are above 235 on Step 1 (if applicable) and Step 2.
Does the year of Medical School graduation matter?
Yes. We prefer candidates who have graduated from medical school within the past eight years. However, we do consider candidates who have had substantial clinical experience since graduation. Those who have not had recent clinical contact should ideally participate in observerships or externships in a U.S. hospital prior to interviewing.
Do we work with medical students?
Yes. Medical clerkship students and sub-interns from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will rotate with you on the inpatient ward services.
Do you require clinical experience in the United States?
Familiarity with the U.S. healthcare system is strongly preferred. Non-U.S. trained candidates who have completed a medical school rotation/clerkship, observership or hands-on externship are more likely to be interviewed. In person experiences are preferred over remote or online rotations.
Do you offer observerships or research electives?
Currently, we do not offer observerships or research electives at this campus.
Do you have Open Houses?
We collaborate with other programs in the Department of Medicine during a fall Open House which usually takes place in August or early September.
Do you accept applications outside of the NRMP Match?
No. We participate in the NRMP Match. All applications must be submitted via ERAS. As we receive a very large number of applications, it is currently not possible for us to respond to individual requests about the status of a specific application.
What is the application timeline?
We begin reviewing applications in late September and continue to review applications until November 1 or until all interview slots have been filled, whichever comes first. Invitations are sent on a rolling basis and interviews are normally held between November and January. We review all applications carefully and will inform you if have been chosen for an interview. There is no need to call/email to check on your status or to remind of us of your interest.
Do you consider letters of interest or intent to apply?
We appreciate your interest, but we do not take these into consideration when selecting candidates to interview (the volume is too high) or ranking.
Do you have second look visits?
We do not do second look visits but welcome any questions you may have after your interview.
Are you participating in the NRMP Rank Order List Lock Pilot?
