About Us
The Belfer Institute for Advanced Biomedical Studies was founded in 1996 by Dr. Dennis Shields with a mission to support postdoctoral fellows in their training and professional skills development. He was an ardent believer in the importance of basic biomedical research in providing critical insights into human disease and promoting the development of novel therapeutics.
As the first Belfer Director, Dr. Shields was a passionate and committed supporter of Einstein’s postdoctoral fellows. He believed that the postdoctoral community made an essential contribution to the intellectual life of the school that, at the time, was not sufficiently recognized. His work led to marked improvements in postdoctoral housing, benefits, and educational opportunities.
The Belfer Institute serves as a resource for navigating the postdoctoral journey at Einstein. Whether you're a current or prospective postdoctoral fellow, faculty member, or administrator, we're here to support you.
- We offer a range of educational workshops, professional development opportunities, and social events.
- We provide guidance on postdoctoral policies, including hiring, appointments, terminations, salaries, and housing to postdocs, faculty and staff.
- We offer assistance in the mediation of work-related concerns between you and faculty.
- We partner with the Office of Career & Professional Development to keep you informed about funding opportunities, job openings and career development resources.
We believe in building a thriving postdoctoral community and strive to make your Einstein postdoctoral experience enriching and rewarding.
