Appointment and Reappointment Policies and Procedures

At Einstein, postdocs are appointed as “Postdoctoral Fellows.” A postdoctoral fellow is someone with a doctoral degree, or its professional equivalent, and is engaged in a period of postgraduate research, performed under a mentor's guidance. 

Initiating the Appointment 

  • Departments hiring prospective postdoctoral fellows initiate the appointment process. 
  • Human Resources processes and verifies the prospective postdoctoral fellow’s credentials. Including but not limited to degree verification, and eligibility to work legally in the United States. 
  • The Office of Academic Appointments processes the official appointment and reappointment letters for postdoctoral fellows. 
  • The Office of International Services (OIS) assists foreign nationals regarding visas and immigration status.

Health & Welfare Benefits

Postdoctoral Housing Policies and Procedures

Albert Einstein College of Medicine offers convenient housing for postdoctoral fellows and their families located near the campus. All Einstein housing is managed by the Einstein Housing Office.

Applying for Housing: The Belfer Institute maintains the postdoctoral housing waiting list. The list is composed of eligible postdoctoral fellows at Einstein who wish to reside in postdoctoral housing and those whose appointments have not yet started. 

Application Process: 

  • Contact your department Administrator and request to join the waiting list. 
  • Your Administrator will complete the Postdoctoral Housing Application and submit it to the Belfer Institute along with your curriculum vitae (CV)
  • For postdoctoral fellows who have not yet arrived, the signed letter of appointment must also be submitted. 
  • Once on the waiting list, the Belfer Institute will notify the postdoctoral fellow when an apartment becomes available. 

Degree Requirement: New postdoctoral fellows require confirmation of completion of their graduate degree or satisfactory documentation from a degree granting institution prior to becoming eligible for postdoctoral housing.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine requires minimum stipend levels.

Termination Policy and Procedures 

For postdoctoral appointments at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Belfer Institute requires at least two (2) months' notice prior to termination. 

Principal investigators are strongly encouraged to provide postdoctoral fellows with even more notice, whenever possible, to facilitate the transition of the postdoctoral fellow to another position and to minimize disruption to ongoing research projects.
