Jacobi Montefiore Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

Overview

The Surgical Critical Care (SCC) Fellowship, ACGME accredited in 2018, and sponsored by the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is primarily based at Jacobi Medical Center. Jacobi Medical Center, located in the Bronx, is an American College of Surgeons verified Adult Level I Trauma Center and pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center and part of New York City’s municipal hospital system, the largest in the country. With well over 2000 trauma admissions (>20% penetrating) a year, Jacobi is the busiest trauma center in New York City. Additionally, Jacobi is one of only three regional burn centers in New York.

Fellows will do at least 8 months of critical care to be board eligible for SCC along with 1 month of critical care related electives and 2 months on the trauma service. The Fellow will receive experience in the management of complex blunt and penetrating trauma, traumatic brain injury, post-operative orthopaedic, urologic, obstetrics/gynecologic, vascular, complex general surgical, and cardiothoracic patients. Additionally, with 2 months rotating on the trauma service and trauma call throughout the year, the curriculum allows for ample opportunity for the Fellow to gain operative exposure in trauma and acute care surgery. One month of elective time, allows the interested Fellow to gain exposure, pre-hospital, burn ICU, medical ICU and echocardiography training. The Fellow will have 4 weeks of vacation scheduled at their discretion.

The Fellow will work with and is expected to teach residents from the Montefiore General Surgery Program. Six SCC board certified, core faculty members are dedicated to providing the Fellow a rigorous and dynamic year of education in trauma and acute care surgery based critical care medicine. Our mission is to prepare a board eligible/certified surgeon, who has successfully completed an ACGME (or equivalent) general surgery residency program, for an exciting career in Trauma and SCC, meeting them where they are at in their training and taking them to the next level.
