Oscar H. Purugganan
<p>Oscar H. Purugganan, MD, MPH, is an attending physician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Purugganan’s clinical focus is on the assessment and management of developmental problems in infants and young children and those with chronic health conditions that put them at risk for developmental problems.</p><p>After earning his Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of the Philippines in Quezon City, Philippines, in 1986, Dr. Purugganan earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in Manila, Philippines, in 1991. He then moved to the United States to continue his medical training, completing his pediatric internship and residency at New York University Medical Center-Bellevue Hospital in 1995, his Master of Public Health from Columbia University School of Public Health in 1998, and a fellowship in behavioral pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein in 1998. Following this, Dr. Purugganan completed an additional fellowship in developmental pediatrics at the Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center, Rose F. Kennedy Center in 1999.</p><p>Dr. Purugganan’s research focuses on early identification of autism spectrum disorder, neonatal-follow-up, developmental surveillance and screening and intellectual disabilities. He has given many invited presentations and has shared his work through numerous peer-reviewed journals, reviews, chapters, editorials and poster presentations.</p><p>Dr. Purugganan is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in General Pediatrics, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.</p>
Jennifer C. Yoffe
<p>Jennifer C. Yoffe, MD, is an attending physician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Yoffe specializes in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, with interests in early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and management of behavioral issues in children with developmental disabilities.</p><p>A graduate of Yale University, after receiving her Bachelor of Arts in 2009, Dr. Yoffe pursued her medical degree at New York University School of Medicine, earning her Doctor of Medicine in 2013. She began her postgraduate training at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, completing her residency in 2016. From 2019 to 2022, she completed her fellowship in developmental-behavioral pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein.</p><p>Dr. Yoffe’s research interests build on her clinical interests. She has shared her work through peer-reviewed journals, abstracts and poster presentations.</p><p>Dr. Yoffe is board certified in General Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>
Maria D.R. Valicenti-McDermott
Maria D. Valicenti-McDermott, MD, is a physician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein, Child and Adolescent Unit Co-Director at the Children's Evaluation & Rehabilitation Center (CERC) at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Valicenti-McDermott’s clinical focus is in diagnosing and managing developmental and learning issues in school age children and adolescents.<br /><br />In 1992, Dr. Valicenti-McDermott earned her Doctor of Medicine from Universidad de Buenos Aires, Facultad de Medicina in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She began her postgraduate training at Hospital de Niños de Buenos Aires “Ricardo Gutierrez”, Universidad de Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires, Argentina, completing her pediatric internship and residency in 1998, taking the role of Chief of Residents in her final year. She continued her postgraduate training in the United States, completing a pediatric residency at Jacobi Medical Center in 2002 followed by a fellowship in developmental and behavior pediatrics at CERC and the Clinical Research Training Program at Einstein in 2005.<br /><br />Dr. Valicenti-McDermott’s research focuses on conditions such as learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism, as well as exploring effective intervention strategies, assessment tools and the impact of environmental and socio-demographic factors on child development. She has shared her work through peer-reviewed journals, abstracts and poster presentations.<br /><br />Dr. Valicenti-McDermott is board certified in General Pediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics.<br />

<p>Ruth E.K. Stein, MD, is an attending pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical focus is in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, child and adolescent mental health and chronic conditions in children.</p><p>A graduate of Barnard College, Columbia University, after receiving her Bachelor of Arts, Dr. Stein attended Einstein, earning her Doctor of Medicine in 1966. She started her postgraduate training at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, completing two years of her pediatric residency there in 1968. She then went to Children’s Hospital of the District of Columbia, completed the third year as assistant chief resident and fellow in comprehensive care. She returned to the faculty at Einstein in 1970 and has been on the faculty ever since. In 1987 and 1988, she was a visiting scholar at Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, Yale University School of Medicine.</p><p>Dr. Stein’s research focuses on improving outcomes for children and members of their families, especially those with a wide range of physical and behavioral conditions, as well as on measurement development. She has shared her work through more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, as well as four edited books, and innumerable chapters, abstracts, and presentations at national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Stein is a manuscript reviewer for several medical journals and has served on the editorial boards of the <em>Journal of Development and Behavioral Pediatrics</em> and <em>Ambulatory Pediatrics</em>.</p><p>Dr. Stein is a Diplomate of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics, American Board of Pediatrics. She is a member of many professional societies, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Academic (formerly Ambulatory) Pediatric Association (including as its president 1987-8), and the Society for Behavioral and Developmental Pediatrics, among others. Throughout her career, she has been active on regional, national and international committees. Dr. Stein has received many accolades, receiving Einstein’s first award for outstanding mentorship in clinical research and its Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as research awards from the Academic Pediatric Association, the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>
Lisa H. Shulman
<p>Lisa Shulman, M.D., is a leading developmental pediatrician who specializes in diagnosing and treating children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other developmental and learning disabilities.</p>
<p>Dr. Shulman serves as the director of Infant Toddler Services at Montefiore’s Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center (CERC), which provides family-based diagnostic assessment and treatment services for young children who have or are suspected of having developmental delays. She also directs CERC’s RELATE program, which offers evaluation and treatment for young children with autism and ASD.</p>
<p>Her research interests include early identification of autism, healthcare disparity in autism diagnosis and management, and the use of complementary and alternative medicine in treating autism.</p>
<p>Dr. Shulman recently led a study that characterized the residual learning and cognitive needs of school-aged children whose early ASD diagnosis resolved. The study showed that most children who outgrow their autism diagnosis still struggle with emotional, behavioral or leaning difficulties later in life.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.6pt;">Dr. Shulman is a developmental pediatrician and a neurodevelopmental pediatrician with special expertise in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and learning disabilities. <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 15.6pt;">Dr. Shulman is the Interim Director of the Children’s Evaluation & Rehabilitation Center (CERC) at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She is the Director of Autism Services at the program which follows over 2,000 children with autism from early childhood through adulthood and provides appropriate medical and educational services in a “one-stop shopping” model. She is also the Director of the Infant Preschool Team which provides diagnostic assessment of young children who have or are suspected of having developmental delays. She is the Director of the nationally funded Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) training program at the center. Dr. Shulman is on the Autism Executive Committee of the Council on Children with Disabilities of the National American Academy of Pediatrics. She is the Centers for Disease Control Act Early Ambassador Emeritus to New York state. </p>

<p>Lisa Heidi Shulman, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Since joining the Montefiore team, her clinical focus has been on the early identification and long-term management of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as improving access to care for our community, identification and management of early motor delays and toe walking gait. </p><p>In 1983, Dr. Shulman received a Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics/Psychology at Brown University. She then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where she received her Doctor of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Shulman began her postgraduate training in 1987 with a 3-year internship and residency in Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center. In 1992, she completed a clinical fellowship in Pediatric Neurodevelopment at the Rose F. Kennedy Center, Children’s Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.</p><p>Aligning with her clinical interests, her research also focuses on other aspects of ASD, including early diagnosis, developmental outcomes in children with an early diagnosis, comorbid medical and developmental problems, parental stress and complementary and alternative medicine usage in ASD. Dr. Shulman is involved in numerous projects involving ASD, including one that began in 2019 that aims to identify the causes of ASD by carrying out genetic testing, phenotyping, and demographic profiles on the parents of children with ASD. Her work has been shared nationally at presentations and lectures and has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, books, review articles and abstracts. She is a featured contributor for Einstein’s blog, the Doctor’s Tablet (<a href="https://blogs.einsteinmed.edu/">https://blogs.einsteinmed.edu/</a>) and has produced popular videos demonstrating baby milestones (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZSjm0drIGM">https://www.youtube.com/wa… 2008 to 2019, Dr. Shulman has been named one of “<em>New York’s Super Doctors: Best Physicians as Chosen by Their Peers</em>.” She served as the Centers for Disease Control Act Early Ambassador to New York State from 2016-2019. She sits on the National Autism Subcommittee of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and is a member of the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, and the International Society for Autism Research.</p>
Rosa M. Seijo
<p>Rosa M. Seijo, MD, is a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical interests include early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders and psychopharmacology for behavioral difficulties in children and adolescents with developmental disabilities.</p><p>In 1986, Dr. Seijo received her Bachelor of Arts in psychobiology from Wellesley College. She then attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, earning her Doctor of Medicine in 1990. For her postgraduate training, she came to Montefiore Einstein, completing her pediatric residency in 1993 and her pediatric developmental/behavioral fellowship in 1995.</p><p>Dr. Seijo’s research interests include children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and suicide screening in children with developmental disabilities. She has shared her work through peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, abstracts, poster presentations and invited presentations.</p><p>Dr. Seijo is board certified in Pediatrics, and Developmental/Behavioral Pediatrics. She is a member of the Developmental Behavioral Society of Greater New York.</p>

<p>Maris D. Rosenberg, MD, is an attending physician at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Clinical Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical focus is in developmental-behavioral pediatrics, with a special focus on developmental and behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorders and learning disorders.</p><p>After graduating from Cornell University with her Bachelor of Science in nutrition, Dr. Rosenberg attended State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center, earning her Doctor of Medicine in 1980. She completed her pediatric residency at Jacobi Medical Center, Alber Einstein College of Medicine in 1983, and continued her training at Einstein to complete her fellowship in developmental pediatric and the care of children with disabilities in 1985.</p><p>Dr. Rosenberg’s research focuses on developmental disabilities in children, with work shared through review articles and book chapters.</p><p>Dr. Rosenberg is board certified in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics.</p>
Elisa I. Muniz
Dr. Muñiz’s clinical focus is in the evaluation and management of children with developmental and behavioral issues.

<p>Elisa I. Muñiz, MD, MS, is Director of the Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship Program at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. Dr. Muñiz’s clinical focus is in the evaluation and management of children with developmental and behavioral issues. </p><p>Dr. Muñiz received her Bachelor of Science in 1998 from Binghamton University, State University of New York. In 2003, she received her Doctor of Medicine from Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Muñiz received her Master of Science with distinction in 2013 from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. From 2003 to 2006, she completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. From 2006 to 2007 she served as Chief Resident. In 2013, she completed a fellowship in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at the Children?s Hospital at Montefiore.</p><p>Dr. Muñiz’s research has focused on the relationship between early childhood routines and young children’s emotional development.
