<p>James M. Szymanski, MD, MHA, is Director, Apheresis, Associate Director, Transfusion Medicine and Assistant Professor, Pathology at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Szymanski is deeply focused on immunohematology and clinical apheresis, constantly striving to advance patient care in these specialized disciplines. They are passionate about data-driven healthcare and specialize in clinical informatics and data science to leverage technology for medical innovation and improved clinical outcomes.</p><p>After obtaining their Bachelor of General Studies in biology and public health at the University of Michigan in 2001, Dr. Syzmanski earned their Master of Healthcare Administration at the same institution in 2003. Following this, they earned their Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State School of Medicine in 2008.</p><p>Dr. Szymanski centers their research on leveraging data science techniques to gain a deeper understanding of diseases, with the objective of enhancing patient outcomes and patient safety. Their work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and they have given poster presentations and invited lectures nationally.</p><p>Dr. Szymanski is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pathology and is board certified in Clinical Pathology, Transfusion Medicine and Blood Banking and Clinical Informatics. In 2016, they won the Leo M. Davidoff Society Teaching Award and in 2021, Dr Szymanski won the Outstanding Teaching Award from Montefiore Einstein’s Department of Pathology.</p>

<p>Kathleen D. Asas, MD, MPH, is the Inpatient Clinical Informatics Lead at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She also serves as Medical Director for the CHAM 8 pediatric unit. Dr. Asas’s clinical focus is on improving care and multidisciplinary communication for hospitalized children and effective care transitions.</p><p>In 2003, Dr. Asas received her Master of Public Health from Yale University School of Public Health with a special focus on microbial diseases. In 2007, she earned her Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies. Dr. Asas completed her pediatric internship at Stonybrook University in 2008, followed by her pediatric residency at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in 2010.</p><p>Dr. Asas’s research interests include clinical informatics and digital technology integration for pediatric care, education about electronic health records and data analytical tools and pediatric quality improvement and patient safety. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed publications.</p><p>Dr. Asas is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), a member of the AAP Council on Clinical Information Technology (COCIT) and a member of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Dr. Asas has received the Teaching Star Commendation from Montefiore Einstein for multiple years.</p>
Dr. Amin’s clinical focus is on the study of tissue to diagnose inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the skin.
Dr. Amin’s research focus follows her clinical interests in dermatopathology.
<p>Bijal Amin, MD, Associate Professor of Pathology and Internal Medicine, serves as the Director of the Dermatopathology and Program Director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Amin’s clinical focus is on the study of tissue to diagnose inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the skin.</p><p>Dr. Amin matriculated from the prestigious accelerated BA/MD program at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She started her postdoctoral training with an internship in internal medicine at University of Washington. She then went to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology from 2004 to 2008, acting as chief resident in pathology in her final year. In 2009, she completed a yearlong dermatopathology fellowship through a joint program with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell. In 2020, she completed the Healthcare Information Technology certificate program at Columbia University. </p><p>Dr. Amin’s research focus follows her clinical interests in dermatopathology. Her work has been published in several peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, abstracts and presentations.</p>
<p>Dr. Amin is board certified and is a member of several professional societies including the College of American Pathologists and American Society of Dermatopathology. In 2015, she was awarded Teacher of the Year by Einstein’s Division of Dermatology. In addition to her work in dermatopathology, Dr. Amin has an interest in clinical informatics.</p>
