<p>Mauricio Drummond Jr., MD, is an attending surgeon and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics and Orthopedic Surgery at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore. Dr. Drummond&rsquo;s clinical focus is in pediatric sports medicine with a special focus on knee pathology. His interests include pediatric orthopedic surgery, complex pediatric and adolescent sports medicine, ACL, PCL and multiligament knee injuries, discoid meniscus, meniscus transplantation, patellofemoral instability, trochlear dysplasia, cartilage preservation and pediatric trauma and limb deformities.</p><p>In 1996, Dr. Drummond earned his Doctor of Medicine from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He completed his residency training at the same institution, and practiced as a knee specialist for more than 13 years in Brazil. In 2018, he came to the United States, completing an orthopedic surgery research fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2019 and an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2020. He continued his postdoctoral training, completing his pediatric orthopedics and limb deformity fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in 2021 and his pediatric orthopedics fellowship at Connecticut Children&rsquo;s Medical Center in 2022.</p><p>Dr. Drummond&rsquo;s research interests include discoid meniscus, trochlear dysplasia, patellofemoral instability and ACL tears. He has shared his work nationally and internationally through peer-reviewed journals and podium and poster presentations. He is also a reviewer for the <em>American Journal of Sports Medicine</em>.</p><p>Dr. Drummond is a member of several professional organizations including the International Society of Arthroscopy and Knee Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society (PRiSM).</p>

<p>Dr. Yang earned his medical degree at Beijing Medical University in China followed by an orthopaedic residency at Peking University People&rsquo;s Hospital in Beijing, China.&nbsp; Following his training in China, he came to the United States where he earned a Master&rsquo;s degree in Biological Sciences from Hunter College at the City University of New York. Dr. Yang completed a second orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Texas, in Houston and then he did a fellowship in Orthopaedic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.</p>
<p>Dr. Yang specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors in the musculoskeletal system. A multidisciplinary approach is emphasized in his practice. He performs surgery to remove the tumor fom the limb and pelvis, and rebuild them using techniques tailored for each individual patient. Dr. Yang is also interested in treating metastatic bony lesions originating from other parts of the body.</p>
<p>Dr. Yang has a strong interest in the research of musculoskeletal tumors. He has been studying the tumorigenesis of osteosarcoma and the genetic profile of the tumors as comparison to its normal counterpart tissues.&nbsp; He has also studied the mechanism of chemotherapy resistance in osteosarcoma and related signaling pathways, as well as novel strategies to overcome it in collaboration with the pediatric sarcoma teams.</p>

<p>Melinda S. Sharkey, MD, is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Montefiore. She specializes in the operative and nonoperative treatment of general pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal problems, including traumatic injuries, as well as congenital and developmental disorders. Her practice particularly focuses on the surgical treatment of bone deformities, foot deformities, limb length discrepancies, and metabolic bone diseases. </p><p>Dr. Sharkey received her Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry in 1999 at Wellesley College. In 2004, she received her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Sharkey completed an internship in General Surgery and a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California San Francisco from 2004 to 2009. She then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital of Philadelphia.</p><p>Dr. Sharkey&rsquo;s research focuses on orthopedic surgery, and the practice of academic medicine. Biography

<p>Jacob F. Schulz, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who provides comprehensive pediatric orthopedic care with an emphasis on spinal deformity, neuromuscular disease and trauma. He has a particular interest in the growing spine, with experience using the vertical expandable titanium rib (VEPTR) device and vertebral tethering through a thoracoscopic approach. At our Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery.</p><p>He served both his internship and residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia where he was honored with the Frank Hammond Sivitz and Chief Resident Teaching Awards in 2011. During his residency, he traveled to Neustadt, Germany to study spine deformity at the Schoen Clinic, and to San Pedro Sula in Honduras to help CURE International provide world class orthopedic care to children. Dr. Schulz completed his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at Rady Children&rsquo;s Hospital-San Diego, ranked second by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report</em> in 2012.</p><p>Dr. Schulz&rsquo;s research has been published in The Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics (JPO) and presented at several national meetings. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA).</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>Paul E. Levin, MD, joined Montefiore and our Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2004 and is the Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedics as well as the Director of the Department of Orthopedics, Moses Campus. At Einstein, he serves as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a board-certified orthopedic specialist with expertise in general orthopedics, the nonoperative management of musculoskeletal conditions, fracture surgery and complications of fractures.<br /><br />He received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in 1980 and completed his orthopedic residency at Montefiore in 1985. He subsequently completed a fellowship in orthopedic traumatology at the University of Texas and a second fellowship in fracture care at the Kantosspital in Basel, Switzerland.<br /><br />Dr. Levin teaches classes in bioethics and a course in Patients, Doctors and Communities, both of which focus on collaboration among patients and professionals regarding healthcare delivery. Known for exploring treatment options with his patients along with the desire to identify a strategy for successful care without surgical intervention, he has been called on to lecture on patient-clinician communication and surgical safety. Dr. Levin is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and chairman of the organization's Committee on Ethics and Lectures.<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Alexa J. Karkenny, MD, is an attending physician in the pediatric division of orthopedic surgery and Clinical Instructor at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Karkenny&rsquo;s clinical interest is in the treatment of pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal problems. Dr. Karkenny started her postgraduate training at Montefiore-Einstein with an internship and residency in orthopedic surgery from 2014 to 2019. She then went to the Children&rsquo;s Hospital of Philadelphia to pursue a yearlong fellowship in pediatric orthopedic surgery, which she completed in 2020.</p><p>Dr. Karkenny&rsquo;s research interests include neuromuscular scoliosis, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, intraoperative navigation in orthopedic surgery, hip dysplasia, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Legg-Calv&eacute;-Perthes disease, vitamin D deficiency and pediatric fractures, pediatric injury prevention and occupational radiation exposure. <p></p>Mani Kahn, MD, is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in the treatment of injuries to the upper and lower extremities as well as to the pelvis. He has a particular interest in treating periarticular fractures, fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum, performing complex limb reconstruction, and the correction of failed or infected fractures.<br /><br />Dr. Kahn attended the University of Maryland for his undergraduate degree, where he pursued research in biochemistry and was awarded several research fellowships, including the Rollinson Fellowship and the famed Howard Hughes Medical Institute's fellowship. He went on to obtain a Masters of Science in physiology and biophysics from Georgetown University. Dr. Kahn continued his studies at New York Medical College, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine and Masters in Public Health. Dr. Kahn completed his residency training at Montefiore Medical Center. While a resident, he received two of the highest awards given to residents: the Anatomy Award and the Richard Selznick Memorial Research Award.<br /><br />Following his residency, Dr. Kahn continued his training at Duke University with a fellowship in trauma surgery, where he received an AOTrauma research fellowship. He was also privileged to continue his training with two sought-after traveling fellowships. Dr. Kahn received a travelling fellowship award in limb lengthening and reconstructive surgery, and he travelled across the country to work with the best limb reconstruction surgeons in the world. He was also selected as the recipient of the prestigious Jack McDaniel AO Travelling Fellowship, and studied under the guidance of Dr. Marcel Jakob at University of Basel Hospital in Switzerland.<br /><br />Dr. Kahn has authored several publications in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and has been invited as faculty in a national course for the training of residents in the principles of fracture care.<p></p>

<p>Dr. Gomez moved to New York City from Bogota-Colombia after earning his medical degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. He completed his internship and residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Columbia University where he obtained the prestigious <em>&ldquo;Rosamond Kane Award for Excellence in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery&rdquo;</em>. <p>Jaime A. Gomez, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon with expertise in the nonoperative and operative treatment of scoliosis, pediatric orthopedics and spinal surgery. He has trained and applied cutting-edge, growth-friendly techniques for young children with scoliosis. He has significant interest in less invasive techniques, such as scoliosis casting, as well as the most complex deformity correction osteotomies for scoliosis in both children and adults. Dr. Gomez joined Montefiore in 2015 and serves as an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Co-Director of Pediatric Orthopedic Research at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine.</p><p>After earning his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Gomez served his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Columbia University in New York City, where he was honored with the prestigious Rosamond Kane Award for Excellence in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery. He also completed a pediatric orthopedic fellowship at Harvard Medical School?s Boston Children?s Hospital and a spinal surgery fellowship at New York University?s Hospital for Joint Diseases.</p><p>Dr. Gomez's research is focused on clinical outcomes in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis. As a member of the largest international multicenter study group on early-onset scoliosis, the Children Spine Study Group, he has presented his research in multiple national and international conferences and has contributed to more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He is a member of several orthopedic societies, including the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and he is a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He has also worked with the Butterfly Foundation in the Dominican Republic and with Healing the Children in Colombia, providing orthopedic surgical care and training to local orthopedists.</p><p>Dr. Gomez is a native Spanish speaker.</p>

<p>Eric D. Fornari, MD, is Co-Director of the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein. He is the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as the Well-Being Officer for the department. Dr. Fornari is also Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Fornari is an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in pediatric orthopedics. His clinical focus is on pediatric and adolescent hip disorders and sports medicine. He is passionate about patient care, clinical research and the advancement of the field of pediatric orthopedic surgery.</p><p>After completing his undergraduate training at Colgate University, Dr. Fornari went on to attend medical school at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where he graduated <em>magna cum laude</em> and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston where he was awarded the Henry H. Banks Award for the outstanding chief resident. He then went on to complete his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at Rady Children&rsquo;s Hospital in San Diego, and later completed a fellowship in Bern, Switzerland, focusing on hip preservation surgery.</p><p>Dr. Fornari has a robust research portfolio. He is an active member of the International Perthes Study Group, serving as the Patient Reported Outcome Lead. He is also an active part of multicenter research with the International Hip Dysplasia Registry (IHDR) and SCFE Longitudinal International Prospective (SLIP) Registry, as well as the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society&rsquo;s (PRiSM) Hip Research Interest Groups.</p><p>Dr. Fornari joined the faculty at Montefiore Einstein and the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx, NY, in 2012. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has been heavily involved with the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) since starting his practice. He previously served on the Children&rsquo;s Orthopaedics in Underdeveloped Regions (COUR) Committee and, while chair of this committee, he led the transition to the Pediatric Orthopedic Global Outreach committee. He has also served on the Communications Committee as well as the Bylaws Committee. He is a founding member of PRiSM and has been active with a number of committees and research groups within the organization. He is also an active member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.</p><p>In 2023, Dr. Fornari was awarded the Angela Kuo Award by POSNA for his research on the impact of mental health on adolescents undergoing scoliosis surgery. He has won numerous awards and accolades, including being chosen as the Department of Orthopedic Surgery 2017 Attending of the Year by the graduating chief residents. He was selected to be part of the inaugural cohort for the Montefiore Physician Leadership Program and subsequently completed The Health Management Academy Physician Leadership Program.</p><p>Dr. Fornari is an active volunteer, administering orthopedic surgical care and training worldwide. He has partnered with Health Volunteers Overseas and Orthopedics Overseas in Malawi, Africa. For the last decade he has partnered with Project Perfect World, traveling annually to Guayaquil, Ecuador, to provide comprehensive pediatric orthopedic care to children in need and training to local residents and surgeons.</p>
