Graduate Program in the Biomedical Sciences

Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences Course Requirements

PhD Students – Graduate Course Requirements:

Must successfully complete a minimum of 21 graduate course credits, preferably in the first year.

Must successfully complete the following courses:

  • Course on becoming a scientist
  • Quantitative Skills for the Biomedical Researcher I
  • Quantitative Skills for the Biomedical Researcher II
  • Responsible Conduct of Research (year 1)
  • Responsible Conduct of Research – Advanced (year 5)

Note: Course credits for Responsible Conduct of Research, Responsible Conduct of Research – Advanced, and the course on Being a Scientist are not counted towards the 21 credit requirement.

Must successfully complete their department-specific course requirements.

May apply for Transfer credit for a graduate course taken at a prior institution, if that course is deemed equivalent to a current Einstein graduate course as recommended by the current graduate course leader. No more than two graduate courses can be approved for transfer credit and no additional credit will be applied if student is afforded the “Master’s credit.” (In this case, only exemptions apply.) A student who has received Master’s credit cannot receive additional transfer credits for graduate courses taken elsewhere.

May be exempted from an Einstein graduate course if the student has taken a comparable graduate course or combination of courses at a prior attended institution, that covered the same material as the Einstein course. An exempted course is not counted towards the minimum required course credit of 21 and therefore, another course must be taken in its place.

May apply for Master’s credit. Master’s credit may be granted if the student earned a Master of Science or Master of Arts degree in a relevant discipline, or a Doctor of Medicine degree, from a previously attended institution. If the request is approved, the student is granted three (3) credits towards the program course credit requirement. The student then has to take 18 course credits in order to satisfy the program course requirements.

MSTP Students - Graduate Course Requirements:

Must successfully complete a minimum of 18 graduate course credits, preferably in the first year.

Must successfully complete the following graduate courses:

  • Biochemistry
  • Physiology: Membranes and Transport
  • Quantitative Skills for the Biomedical Researcher I and II
  • Responsible Conduct of Research

Note: Course credits for Responsible Conduct of Research do not count towards the 18 graduate course credit minimum for MSTP students.

Must successfully complete their department-specific course requirements.
