<p>Barry S. Zingman, M.D., has been the Medical Director of the AIDS Center at Montefiore since 2003 following his service as Medical Director of the AIDS Center's Center for Positive Living/Infectious Diseases (CPL/ID) Clinic for five years.</p>
<p>Dr. Zingman directs the largest multidisciplinary and multispecialty adult HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention program in New York State. His program&rsquo;s clinical sites include (1) the Center for Positive Living/I.D. Clinic, for HIV, Hepatitis C, and general Infectious Diseases care; (2) The Oval Center at Montefiore, which provides screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis programs, and Hepatitis C care; and (3) other inpatient and outpatient sites at the Moses Division of Montefiore Medical Center. He has been Principal Investigator or Medical Director on over 75 HIV/AIDS-related research protocols and grants. These currently include grants from HRSA, the New York State Department of Health's AIDS Institute, NIH, and industry for multidisciplinary HIV primary care and testing; HIV retention, adherence and viral suppression; studies of broadly-neutralizing therapeutic HIV antibodies; new HIV viral load assays; response to pneumococcal vaccine in HIV+ and HIV- individuals; and studies of other new antiretroviral agents.</p>
<p>Dr. Zingman directs an HIV research team consisting of 6 study coordinators that enrolls over 200 patients per year into research protocols.</p>
<p>Dr. Zingman is Professor of Clinical Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is formerly Chair of the AIDS Institute's Medical Care Criteria Committee (the principal body setting HIV care guidelines in NYS); former Vice-Chair of the NYS AIDS Institute's Quality of Care Advisory Committee; and Chair or Member on numerous other state and national HIV quality and standard of care subcommittees. He is a practicing infectious diseases subspecialist and maintains an active patient panel in the CPL/ID Clinic and the Department of Medicine Faculty Practice.</p>

<p>Barry S. Zingman, MD, is Medical Director, AIDS Center and Clinical Director, Infectious Diseases at Montefiore Einstein, and Professor, Medicine at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Zingman cares for people with a wide range of infectious disease conditions including HIV care, HIV prevention (PrEP; PEP), sexually transmitted infections, COVID, MPOX (monkeypox), other viral infections, diabetic foot infections, bone infections, heart and lung infections, post-surgical infections, tuberculosis and many others.</p><p>After completing his Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry at Brandeis University in 1981, Dr. Zingman attended New York University School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 1985. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital in 1988. Dr. Zingman continued his training at Boston University School of Medicine, completing clinical and research fellowships in infectious diseases in 1991.</p><p>Dr. Zingman&rsquo;s research focuses on new treatments, vaccines, and other preventive strategies for infectious diseases including HIV, sexually transmitted infections, other viral infections, E coli urinary tract infections and others. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals, articles, case reports, book chapters, abstracts, and other media as well as presentations, invited lectures and webinars.</p><p>Dr. Zingman is board certified in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine. He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) and the HIV Medicine Association of IDSA. In 2017, he was inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society for distinguished, caring and committed teaching of medical students.</p>

<p>Dr. Weston&rsquo;s research interests include the epidemiology, mechanisms of resistance, and therapy of multi-drug resistant gram-negative infections, particularly Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobateriaceae.&nbsp; He works with mathematical modeling techniques to predict which patients are at high risk of CRE bloodstream infections.&nbsp; He also organizes Montefiore&rsquo;s participation in the CRACKLE II multicenter database of CRE infections.</p>
<p>Dr. Weston&rsquo;s inpatient clinical work is on a service dedicated to infectious disease consultation in the intensive care and step down units of Weiler hospital.&nbsp; This includes brief daily rounds with each unit to identify needs for consultation and provide antibiotic stewardship guidance.&nbsp; He is a member of the Montefiore Antibiotic Stewardship Team and also sees patients in an Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy clinic.</p>
<p>Dr. Weston is a graduate of Regis High School in New York.&nbsp; He received his undergraduate education summa cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts.&nbsp; He received a medical&nbsp;degree from&nbsp;the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York.&nbsp; He completed Internal&nbsp;Medicine residency at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.&nbsp; Dr. Weston joined Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2013 for his fellowship in Infectious Diseases.&nbsp; During Fellowship he completed a Master&rsquo;s of Science in Clinical Research degree in the Einstein Clinical Research Training Program.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Toxoplasma gondii</span></em>, microsporidiosis, stage differentiation, polar tube structure and function</p>
<p><strong>Toxoplasmosis:</strong> <em>Toxoplasma gondii</em> is a ubiquitous Apicomplexan protozoan parasite that infects humans, mammals and birds.&nbsp; Despite recent progress in understanding the biology of the rapidly replicating form (tachyzoite), very little is known about the cyst form (bradyzoite). The bradyzoite stage plays a critical role in maintenance of latent infection, the relapse of infections and the development of chronic neurologcial disease.&nbsp; Our research is focused on the identification of cyst wall&nbsp; (bradyzoite) proteins and how they function.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Microsporidiosis:</strong> The phylum Microspora consists of organisms collectively known as microsporidia, that are "emerging" human and veterinary pathogens.&nbsp; A microsporidian-specific organelle, the polar tube, is involved in invasion. While the description of the polar tube as a unique microsporidian structure occurred over 100 years ago, the biochemical components of this structure and the mechanism of its formation during invasion remain to be definitively determined.&nbsp; The laboratory is focused on projects invovling the: (1) characterization of the structure and composition of the polar tube and spore wall, and (2) the identificiation of therapeutic targets for the treatment of microsporidiosis.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Louis M. Weiss, MD, MPH, is Vice Chair, Academic Affairs and Research, Pathology, Co-Director, Einstein Global Health Center and Professor, Pathology and Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical expertise is in the treatment and diagnosis of infectious diseases, with a focus on parasitology and global health.</p><p>After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in biology and chemistry from Lehigh University in 1978, Dr. Weiss earned his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in 1982. Following this, Dr. Weiss completed his internship and residency in medicine at the University of Chicago in 1985 and an infectious diseases fellowship at Einstein Montefiore in 1989.</p><p>Dr. Weiss investigates the biology of <em>Toxoplasma gondii</em> and its ability to cause latent infections, with a focus on the composition and structure of the <em>T. gondii</em> tissue cyst. He also investigates the biology of infection due to the microsporidia, with a focus on the composition of the polar tube and how it functions during microsporidian invasion of a host cell. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, articles, books and chapters, and he has presented this research both nationally and internationally. Dr. Weiss has been a reviewer for scientific journals including <em>mBIO</em>, the <em>Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology</em>, the <em>American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, PLOS Pathogens</em>, the <em>Journal of Infectious Diseases</em> and <em>Experimental Parasitology</em>, and is an editor for <em>mBIO</em> and <em>Microbes and Infection</em>.</p><p>Dr. Weiss is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Microbiology of the American Society of Microbiology. In 2000, Dr. Weiss was inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society for his outstanding teaching of medical students.</p>

<p>Dr. Torres completed his MD degree at Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia) in 2006. He then joined the International Center for Training and Medical Research (CIDEIM) in his home town, Cali, where he spent almost 3 years as a research assistant in the area of Gram negative Bacterial Resistance, where he published and presented his work in national and international journals and conferences.</p>
<p>After completing his Internal Medicine residency at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, Dr. Torres completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases at New York University (NYU). He then joined Englewood Hospital where he spent more than 2 years as an Infectious Disease consultant.</p>
<p>Dr. Torres joined Montefiore Medical Center/Albert&nbsp;Einstein&nbsp;College of Medicine&nbsp;in 2017 as an Assistant Professor. Since then, he has been providing PrEP, PEP, STI, HCV&nbsp;and HIV care to patients in the Bronx, as well as inpatient Infectious Disease consultation services at the hospital.&nbsp; He has an interest to expand HIV prevention projects in Colombia and is working closely with Corporacion de Lucha contra el SIDA in Cali.</p>
<p>Dr. Torres has been a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America since 2012.</p>

Biography

<p>Julian A. Torres lsasiga, MD, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Professor, Infectious Diseases at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Torres&rsquo;s clinical focus centers on general infectious disease care, HIV prevention and care, sexually transmitted infections and medical education.</p><p>After earning his Doctor of Medicine at the Universidad del Valle/Hospital Universitario del Valle in Cali, Colombia in 2006, Dr. Torres became a research assistant at the International Center for Medical Research and Training (CIDEIM) in Cali, Colombia, from 2007 to 2009. He then moved to the United States to continue his medical training, completing his internal medicine residency at Jacobi Medical Center in 2012 and an infectious disease fellowship at New York University in 2014.</p><p>Building on his clinical focus, Dr. Torres&rsquo;s research is focused on HIV prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). He has been co-investigator, principal investigator and sub-investigator on several research projects and he has shared his work through many national and international invited presentations and poster presentations. Dr. Torres is a reviewer for <em>Clinical Infectious Disease, Open Forum Infectious Disease</em> and the <em>International Journal of STD &amp; AIDS</em>. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters, review articles and abstracts.</p><p>Dr. Torres is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the Infectious Disease Society of America. In 2023, he received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Division of Infectious Disease at Montefiore Einstein. The same year, Dr. Torres received the Teaching Star-Teaching Commendation Letter for the 2022-2023 Academic Year from Montefiore Einstein.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Focusing diagnostics and therapeutics on those most likely to benefit is a key to successful intervention&nbsp;at both the public health and clinical levels. The translational goal of the Spivack laboratory is to identify individuals at particularly high risk for lung malignancy, and selected non-malignant lung diseases, upon whom to focus smoking/toxin exposure cessation (primary prevention), chemoprevention (secondary prevention), and early disease detection efforts (disease screening, tertiary prevention).</p>
<p>The laboratory is currently exploring individual Gene x Environment signatures as susceptibility markers by exploring quantitative gene (mRNA) expression phenotypes, and the DNA sequence, methylation, microRNA, and other epigenetic features potentially underlying these expression phenotypes, <em>in vitro</em> and in human populations. This is performed in the setting of defined tobacco, diet, and other exposures. There are both mechanistic and translational components to the studies.&nbsp;</p>
<p><br /><strong>Mechanistically</strong>, the role of epigenetic variation in promoter regions in the 5' and 3' regulatory regions of carcinogenesis and oxidant pathway genes is being explored <em>in vitro</em>, using human genomic DNA reporter constructs, and native gene regulation models. High resolution technologies include the realtime quantitation of native mRNA and microRNA by the laboratory's RNA-specific strategy (<em>patented</em>); the&nbsp;tagged-bisulfite genomic sequencing strategy to determine single base resolution CpG methylation status (tBGS, <em>patented</em>);&nbsp;&nbsp;an experimental strategy for assaying microRNA binding to mRNA, for determining the role of miRNA in candidate gene regulation&nbsp;(<em>patented</em>); and evaluation of functional consequences of DNA&nbsp;methylation detail, using a novel patch reporter construct (<em>patented</em>).&nbsp; A new method to engineer methyl-cytosines into the epigenome has recently been developed.</p>
<p>Whole (epi)genome approaches to identify molecular events unique to lung cancer&nbsp;are being completed, which will represent one of the initial cross-platform 'omics level discovery examinations of&nbsp;lung&nbsp;tissues.&nbsp; The execution of each individual discovery platform involves&nbsp;expert local collaborators and cores&nbsp;in (epi)genetics and genomics, and the "integromics" is critically reliant on Einstein strengths in informatics and biostatistical analyses.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Translationally</strong>, human lung carcinogenesis biomarkers are being established by pairing laser capture microdissected lung with several unique, non-invasively collected surrogate specimens developed in the laboratory. These include mRNA expression signatures from brush-exfoliated buccal mucosa cells, microRNAs detected in exhaled breath condensate representing first reports for a new exhaled airway biomarker class, and exhaled metabolomic signatures. These airway-derived specimens continue to accrue from a sampling (currently n&gt;1000) of a population assembled in a lung cancer case-control context.&nbsp; The specimens are being studied with a view toward developing non-invasive assays in populations.</p>

Biography

<p>Simon D. Spivack, MD, MPH, is Professor, Medicine, Epidemiology and Genetics at Montefiore Einstein. He is also former Emeritus Chief, Pulmonary Medicine. Clinically, Dr. Spivack specializes in consultative pulmonary medicine, with an emphasis on the evaluation of lung nodules, lung cancer screening, asthma, and environmental and interstitial lung disease. </p><p>After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology from McGill University in Montreal, Canada in 1980, Dr. Spivack earned his Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in 1985. He then completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1988. Dr. Spivack then earned his Master of Public Health at Harvard University, School of Public Health in 1989. He completed a clinical pulmonary and critical care medicine and lung research fellowship at the University of Vermont in 1992. </p><p>Dr. Spivack&rsquo;s research focuses on the development of non-invasive early detection airway biomarkers of lung cancer risk, as well as epigenetics, gene regulation, gene-environment interaction and non-invasive measurement of deep lung phenomena in humans. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, articles, chapters and books, and he has given many national/international presentations, organized symposia and visiting professorships. Dr. Spivack is on the Editorial Board for Scientific Reports and is a reviewer for journals such as <em>PLoS Genetics</em>, <em>Genetics in Medicine</em>, <em>Nature Protocols</em>, <em>American Journal of Respiratory &amp; Critical Care Medicine</em>, <em>Carcinogenesis</em>, <em>Cancer Research</em> and others. He holds multiple United States patents. He has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for research for over 25 years.
</p><p>Dr. Spivack is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and the American Lung Association (ALA). He is a frequent peer-reviewer on various NIH study sections. In the past, Dr. Spivack won the Excellence in Research Award from ALA and the NIH/National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Clinical Scientist Development Award.
