<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Childhood cancer research laboratory</strong></span></p>
<p>Our laboratory is focused on childhood cancer research with a goal of elucidating the underlying biology of the most aggressive malignancies. In such patients with typically incurable cancer, we are striving to identify new approaches to and types of treatment. We have multiple ongoing projects:</p>
<p><strong>+ Identification of biologic drivers of ultra-high-risk neuroblastoma</strong>. Neuroblastoma is one of the most common and deadly childhood cancers. Despite intensive research, there are limited therapeutic strategies for patients with <em>de novo </em>chemotherapy resistance that leads to particularly poor outcomes. We have been studying neuroblastoma since 2009 and are identifying additional biologic drivers of highly lethal tumors.</p>
<p>We compare tumor features from patients with early death from tumor progression compared to those with a maintained complete response. We assess unique histo-morphologic and proteomic features and computationally integrate these data with genomic and transcriptomic datasets to develop a combined predictor of primary refractory disease. Patients with this entity require non-standard and/or intensified treatment. Oncogenic drivers are being characterized in the lab which will facilitate strategies for novel pharmacologic intervention.</p>
<p><strong>+ Characterization of neuroblastoma development from neural crest cells</strong>.&nbsp; We are studying pathways and interactions that results in uncontrolled cell proliferation early in neuroblastoma development with an ultimate goal of identifying new targets and approaches for pharmacologic intervention.</p>
<p><strong>+ Evaluation of novel combinatorial targeted therapeutic approaches in neuroblastoma</strong>.&nbsp; With expected outcomes lagging behind those of more common childhood cancers, children with neuroblastoma require new approaches to treatment. Our lab works with multiple international clinical and research consortium groups to perform preclinical studies that substantiate human clinical trials.&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>+ Detection of circulating tumor DNA in osteosarcoma</strong>. With no reliable non-invasive approach for disease monitoring during and after treatment, we are applying cutting edge next-generation sequencing approaches to identify solid tumors with a blood-based &ldquo;liquid&rdquo; biopsies. This will allow clinicians to assess tumor responsiveness to chemotherapy and predict likelihood of recurrence.</p>
<p><strong>+ Assessment of accelerated aging using miRNA-seq in survivors of childhood cancer</strong>. Chemotherapy has many untoward effects on healthy cells and leads to many signs of accelerated aging in children treated for cancer. Using a known microRNA &ldquo;aging&rdquo; signature discovered at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, we are studying what causes this phenotype in childhood cancer, with a goal of offering improved intervention to minimize long-term toxicity of treatment.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Physician Summary</span></strong></p>
<p>Daniel A. Weiser, MD, is board-certified in pediatric hematology/oncology with clinical expertise in neuroblastoma and other tumors of the adrenal glands, kidneys, liver, and gonads. He is the medical director of the intra-abdominal solid tumor program at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore and brings together a highly specialized multi-disciplinary care team to provide comprehensive treatment for diverse pediatric malignancies. In addition, Dr. Weiser directs a childhood cancer research laboratory that focuses on the identification of new targeted agents for cancer therapy, especially in the treatment of rare and aggressive malignancies such as neuroblastoma. His research goals are to understand the role of certain genes in the risk, development, and treatment of cancer. The approaches taken and agents studied hold promise for improving management of all patients with solid tumors.</p>

He has received numerous awards including the Brigid Leventhal Special Merit Award from ASCO and the Conquer Cancer Foundation, and a prestigious K12 from the National Cancer Institute for the training of the next generation of physician-scientists in pediatric cancer. Dr. Weiser is actively involved in teaching and mentorship of trainees, and takes great pride in providing advanced and compassionate care to his patients and their families.</p>

He is also Associate Professor in the Pediatrics and Genetics departments at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His clinical focuses are neuroblastoma and adrenal tumors, Wilms tumor and other kidney (renal) tumors, hepatoblastoma and other liver tumors, germ cell tumors (including testicular and ovarian tumors), Thyroid and other rare tumors, experimental therapeutics, and cancer genetics and biomarkers. Dr. Weiser is actively involved in teaching and mentorship of trainees and takes great pride in his active participation in patient care.</p><p>Dr. Weiser received his Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology in 1995 at Haverford College, PA. In 2004, he received his Doctor of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, NY. He is currently earning his Master of Science in Translational Research at the University of Pennsylvania. He began a residency in Pediatrics at the New York-Presbyterian, Columbia University in 2007. Dr. Weiser then completed a three-year fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at The Children&rsquo;s Hospital of Philadelphia. </p><p>Dr. Weiser&rsquo;s research goals are to understand the role of certain genes in the risk, development, and treatment of cancer. <p>Amanda C. Raff, MD, is Attending Physician, Professor and Associate Chair of Medicine for Undergraduate Medical Education at Montefiore-Einstein. She is also the co-director of the Montefiore-Einstein Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease Program. Dr. Raff&rsquo;s clinical focus is on dialysis and the treatment of patients with chronic kidney disease and end stage kidney disease.</p><p>After earning her Bachelor of Science in biology at Indiana University, Dr. Raff completed her Doctor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, earning her degree in 1998.&nbsp; Her postdoctoral training began at New York Presbyterian Hospital with an internship and residency in internal medicine from 1998 through 2001. She was assistant chief resident at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2000 and chief resident at New York University Downtown Hospital from 2001 to 2002. She then returned to Montefiore-Einstein to complete a two-year fellowship in nephrology in 2004.</p><p>Dr. Raff&rsquo;s research focuses on medical education. She has been the Course Director for the Einstein medical student Renal Course since 2007 and the Internal Medicine Clerkship and Acting Internship Director since 2012. Dr. Raff&rsquo;s contributions in the field of Medical Education include serving as a Nephrology section committee member for the American College of Physicians&rsquo; Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program (MKSAP) 19 and 20 as well as prior work as a Case Editor for Aquifer Internal Medicine and contributing author and reviewer for the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) curriculum revision.</p><p>An enthusiastic medical educator, Dr. Raff has received several awards for her teaching and in 2010 was inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society for outstanding achievement in the teaching of medical students. She is board certified and is a member the American Society of Nephrology and a fellow of the American College of Physicians.</p>

<p>Rishi Malhotra, MD, is Director of Neurocritical Care, Director of the Neuroscience ICU and Director of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship, as well as Associate Professor of Neurology, Medicine and Neurological Surgery at Montefiore Einstein. After completing his internal medicine internship at St. Luke&rsquo;s-Roosevelt Hospital in 2005, Dr. Malhotra completed his three-year neurology residency at Columbia University Medical Center in 2008. Dr. Davila focuses on the care of children with bleeding and clotting disorders.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in psychobiology from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 2000, Dr. Davila earned her Doctor of Medicine at Ross University School of Medicine in 2007. She completed her pediatrics internship and residency at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 2010. Dr. Davila continued her medical training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center/Weill-Cornell Medical College, completing a pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship in 2013 where she was Chief Fellow in her final year. She also completed a research fellowship at the same institution in 2014.</p><p>Dr. Davila's research focuses on thrombosis prevention in children. She has been primary investigator and co-primary investigator on funded research projects, and has shared her work through numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations.</p><p>Dr. Davila is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology Oncology. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Hematology, the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Research Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology, among others. She sits on the board of the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network, is co-chair of the Pediatric sub-committee of the Venous Thromboembolism Network of the United States and is a member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation.</p>

<p>Daniel J. Correa, MD, MSc, is a member to the research team for the Public Engagement Core of The Epilepsy Bioinformatics Study for Antiepileptogenic Therapy (EpiBioS4Rx), working with a consortium of researchers, clinicians, patient organization representatives, patients, and caretakers in TBI and Epilepsy to improve public involvement for future treatment trials. His clinical work at Montefiore Medical Center includes inpatient general neurology and epilepsy services, inpatient epilepsy monitoring, long term EEG monitoring of acutely ill patients. Additionally, he supports the NYC Health Hospitals (Jacobi and North Central Bronx) as an epilepsy attending in their clinical neurophysiology lab. Administratively, he serves as the Deputy Chief of Neurology at the Montefiore Medical Center. After Neurology residency at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he served in the US Army Medical Corps advancing to the rank of Major and received numerous decorations and awards throughout 8 years of active duty service. His military assignments included the Deputy Chief and later Chief of the Neuroscience &amp; Rehabilitation Center, Dwight Eisenhower Army Medical Center (EAMC). At the EAMC he also participated in the clinical education of medical students, residents, and post-doctoral trainees; Neuroscience representative on the Institutional Review Board, and participated in growing a program of neuroscience research. His academic and research interests focus on the areas of traumatic brain injury and epileptogenesis in post-traumatic epilepsy. Under the mentorship of Drs. Solomon L. Mosh&eacute; and Nathalie Jett&eacute;, in 2019 he completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods through the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Clinical Research Training Program. His present work focuses on developing solutions for barriers in the recruitment and implementation of critical care and epilepsy clinical research.<br /><br />In his community outreach and volunteer efforts, Dr. Correa joined a Neurology mission to the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, and previously volunteered as Medical Translator for a Pediatric Cardiology mission to Guayaquil, Ecuador. In New York City he serves on the board of the New York Aikido Society (Bond Street Dojo), an organization dedicated to teaching principles of non-violence, conflict resolution and personal development. He hopes to continue to support local and international community efforts to bridge the community health gaps for underserved communities.</p>

Biography

<p>Daniel Jos&eacute; Correa, MD is Deputy Chief of Neurology at Montefiore and Assistant Professor of Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His clinical focuses include inpatient epilepsy monitoring, long-term EEG monitoring of acutely ill patients, and general neurology inpatient services.</p><p>Dr. Correa received his Bachelor of Science in biology at the University of Mary Washington in 2004. He continued his studies at Howard University College of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 2008. Dr. Correa completed his residency in neurology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 2012. He fulfilled his army duty at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, departing in 2016 as Chief of the Neuroscience and Rehabilitation Center.</p><p>Dr. Correa came to Montefiore to complete a fellowship in neurophysiology and epilepsy in 2017. During this time, Dr. Correa worked in parallel to receive his Master of Science in clinical research methods at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which he completed in 2019.</p><p>Dr. Correa&rsquo;s research explores areas of traumatic brain injury and epileptogenesis in post-traumatic epilepsy.
