<p>Dr. Deborah Swiderski co-leads the psychosocial curriculum for residents in the Social Medicine Program (with Dr. Jennifer Egert of the Psychosocial Unit).&nbsp;</p>
<p>Dr. Swiderski has been a clinician-educator for over twenty-five years with a teaching and research focus on the patient-physician relationship, bioethics and the professional development of physicians. Her other areas of interest include spirituality in medicine and the role of women in medicine. <p>Deborah M. Swiderski, MD, is an attending physician and Professor, Medicine and Family and Social Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. Her clinical focus centers on primary care internal medicine.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts from Barnard College, Dr. Swiderski attended Columbia University, earning her Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Medical Studies followed by her Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Swiderski came to Einstein to complete her internship and residency in internal medicine. She continued her medical education, completing a certificate in Bioethics at New York University/Montefiore Medical Center, as well as a certificate as a Palliative and End-of-Life Care (EPEC) Trainer from Northwestern University.</p><p>Building on her clinical focus, Dr. Swiderski&rsquo;s research interests include communication skills, end-of-life care, health disparities and Bioethics. These are synthesized in her work leading the Serious Illness Conversation Project at Montefiore. She has been Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator on a number of funded research projects, and she has given invited presentations nationally and internationally. Dr. Swiderski&rsquo;s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters, review articles and abstracts. She has been a peer reviewer for scientific journals, including the <em>Journal of General Internal Medicine</em> and <em>Annals of Internal Medicine</em>.</p><p>Dr. Swiderski is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine, the American Academy of Physician and Patient, the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. In 2007, Dr. Swiderski won the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award for Teaching Excellence.</p>

She is board certified in Infectious Diseases, Addiction Medicine, and Internal Medicine and is the Co-Director of the Montefiore Medical Cannabis Program. Dr. Slawek &nbsp;studies how to reduce morbidity and mortality in people with HIV (PWH) and people who use drugs (PWUD) using a harm reduction framework. She aims to study solutions for PWH and PWUD informed by her clinical experiences and patient&rsquo;s experiences. Dr. Slawek is the recipient of a K23 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to test how different formulations of medical cannabis effect neuropathic pain and inflammation in PLWH in an innovative quasi-experimental study. She is leading groundbreaking foundation-funded research to determine whether medical cannabis is effective in reducing opioid analgesic use in people with pain.</p>

<p>Deepika E. Slawek, MD, MS, MPH, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Medicine at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical expertise lies in HIV care and addiction treatment. She provides primary care for HIV patients and management of subsequent chronic conditions, as well as consulting on the management of substance use disorders.</p><p>After completing her Bachelor of Science in human biology at the University of Texas at Austin in 2006, Dr. Slawek earned her Master of Public Health at George Washington University in 2008. She earned her Doctor of Medicine at Texas A&M School of Medicine in 2012, then pursued postdoctoral training in internal medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, completing an internship in 2013 and her internal medicine residency in 2015. She completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at New York University in 2017 before coming to Montefiore Einstein, where she pursued a fellowship in general internal medicine and a Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods, completing both in 2019.</p><p>Building on her clinical expertise, Dr. Slawek&rsquo;s research focuses on improving outcomes in people living with HIV (PLWH). She is currently studying how medical cannabis affects pain in PLWH and is receiving funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. She has been principal investigator on a number of funded research projects, and she has given national and international presentations. Dr. Slawek&rsquo;s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and review articles, and she is a reviewer for scientific journals including <em>Annals of Internal Medicine</em>, the <em>Journal of General Internal Medicine</em>, <em>AIDS and Behaviour</em> and <em>AIDS Care</em>, among others.</p><p>Dr. Slawek is board certified in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases and Addiction Medicine. Victoria Shulman, MD, is an attending physician at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Biography

<p class="MsoNormal">Theresa Serra, MD, joined the CHAM hospitalist division in 2014 after working as a pediatric hospitalist at New York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital. Her interests include clinical research and medical education. She has conducted an IRB approved retrospective chart review examining readmission rates in pediatric patients diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Dr. Serra is currently developing a medical Spanish curriculum for faculty members in order to improve communication between patients, families and providers. Along with Courtney McNamara, MD, Dr. Serra is a co-leader of a multidisciplinary committee dedicated to standardizing and improving quality of care for patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of failure to thrive. Dr. Serra is also working on an initiative to identify vaccine delinquency in the inpatient setting through the use of SMART reports.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Dr. Serra is also collaborating with Lindsey Douglas, MD, MSCR, in an IRB approved quality improvement (QI) project to improve transition-of-care communication between hospitalists and primary care providers and to facilitate the establishment of medical homes. Dr. Serra is also a member of a subcommittee that leads monthly journal clubs/case conferences for pediatric hospitalists.</p>
