Biography

<p>Sarah Evans Norris, MD, MEd, is Director of the Quality in Life Team and Director of Pediatric Palliative Care at Children?s Hospital at Montefiore. She is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. </p><p>Dr. Norris earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Loyola University Chicago in 1993 receiving the Gladys Kinnery Clinical Excellence award. As a nurse she worked around the globe including as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco before pursuing medical school at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. She completed the Fifth Pathway Program through New York Medical College and embarked on her pediatrics internship at the University of Medicine & Dentistry New Jersey. She finished her residency at the Medical College of Georgia where she was named Resident of the Year. Following residency she completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine and a masters in medical education at Cincinnati Children?s Medical Center. After several years in practice she returned to Cincinnati Children?s to complete a second fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine. Dr. Norris is Board Certified in General Pediatrics and in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.</p> <p>Dr. Norris? research focus is on primary palliative care education and family decision making regarding medical technology. She has given numerous presentations nationally and has a wide range of teaching experience with both adults and children internationally. In 2018 she received the Lewis Fraad Excellence in Resident Teaching Award. When she is not at CHAM you can find her running.</p>

<p>Paul Levy, MD, is Director, Center for Inherited Metabolic Disorders and Director, Inherited Metabolic Disease Specialty Care Referral Center at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein. He is also Associate Professor, Pediatrics and Pathology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Levy sees patients with complex medical issues that may have a genetic etiology. He has a special interest in inherited metabolic disorders, including phenylketonuria (PKU), lysosomal storage diseases and urea cycle disorders, and sees newborns referred by the New York State Newborn Screening Program with positive screens.
</p><p>After earning his Doctor of Medicine at Tulane University, Dr. Levy completed his residency in pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. He then completed a fellowship in ambulatory pediatrics at the same institution. Following this, Dr. Levy completed a fellowship in clinical and biochemical genetics at Tulane University. </p><p>Dr. Levy is involved in a long-term follow-up study for children with disorders diagnosed by newborn screening. He also participates in a study looking into a novel way to look at newborn screening and follow-up testing to determine if some infants with positive newborn screens may have a late-onset disease such as Pompe, Krabbe, and mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS I). Dr. Levy is on an advisory panel for Krabbe disease that helps physicians interpret clinical data to help determine infants&rsquo; status and help with needed follow-up. He has been principal investigator and co-investigator on clinical trials and funded research projects, and his work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, review articles, book chapters and meeting abstracts. Dr. Levy has also given several nationally invited presentations and has been a journal reviewer for <em>Pediatrics Journal of Pediatrics and Genetics in Medicine</em>. </p><p>Dr. Levy is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Genetics. He is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Human Genetics, Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. <p>Frederick J. Kaskel, M.D., Ph.D., is an internationally recognized clinical investigator and educator in pediatric nephrology. He is a Chief Emeritus, Nephrology Children's Hospital at Montefioire, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a Past President of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the Congress President of the 15th Scientific Congress of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association.</p>
<p>He received his undergraduate bachelor's degree in Biology from Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill., and his doctorate in Physiology and Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and is a Distinguished Alumnus from both of these institutions. He trained in Pediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, respectively and was a recipient of an NIH National Research Service Award. Prior to returning to Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1998 to become the Director of Pediatric Nephrology, he was a tenured Professor of Pediatrics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.</p>
<p>Dr. Kaskel's research interests range from basic science contributions in developmental renal physiology and mechanisms of renal toxicity and hypertension, to clinical and translational research in the etiologies and treatment of progressive kidney diseases secondary to nephrotic sydnrome and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and hypertension. His current research is aimed at preventing the epidemic of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors and hypertension. He has received continuous research support from the National Institutes of Health and directs the Training Program in Pediatric Nephrology which prepares new physician investigators for careers in Pediatric Nephrology.</p>
<p>He published over 100 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and co-edited a major textbook on Fluids and Electrolytes in Pediatrics. He has numerous collaborations nationally and internationally and is expanding the communications between pediatric nephrology basic and clinical investigators worldwide. He currently plays a major role representing the Department of Pediatrics in the Einstein's prestigious Clinical Translational Science Award.</p>

<p>As Director of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology, Dr. Kaskel is involved in basic and clinical investigations into the mechanisms of the major kidney disorders in pediatrics. He is particularly interested in the physiology and pathophysiology of normal and abnormal development and function of the kidneys throughout the critical periods of growth and maturation extending into adolescence and young adulthood. He is actively involved in a clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to find the most efficacious therapy for focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, one of the major causes of progressive glomerular disease, while investigating the molecular etiologies for its expression. Another NIH-supported study involves chronic kidney disease in children and how it affects their growth and neurocognitive development, and the risk factors for cardiovascular disease and renal progression.</p><p>Dr. Kaskel is a past president of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology, was Congress President of the International Pediatric Nephrology Association 15th Scientific Meeting, and has served as Chair for the Council of Nephrology and Urology of the National Kidney Foundation and the Kidney and Urology Foundation of America. He has also served on the Cardiovascular Renal Advisory Panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and as Associate Editor for the <em>Journal of the IPNA Pediatric Nephrology</em>. In 2002, she attended New York University School of Medicine, earning her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2006. She started her postgraduate training with an internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital from 2006 to 2010. She then pursued a Gynecologic Oncology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, completing the two-year fellowship in 2013.</p><p>Dr. Isani&rsquo;s clinical research includes trials to improve cancer survival and quality of life for cancer patients, as well as issues related to access of care. <p>Nicole Hayde, MD, MS, is a pediatric nephrologist at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM), Medical Director, Pediatric Kidney Transplant Program, Associate Director, Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program and Associate Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Hayde&rsquo;s clinical focus is pediatric renal transplantation, with a particular interest in the role of antibodies in allograft injury.</p><p>After earning her Doctor of Medicine from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica in 2003, Dr. Hayde completed her residency and chief residency in pediatrics at the University of Miami in 2009. She went on to complete her fellowship in pediatric nephrology at CHAM in 2012. During her fellowship, she was also enrolled in the clinical research training program at Einstein, earning her Master of Science in clinical research methods in 2012.</p><p>Dr. Hayde&rsquo;s research focus is on the role of donor-specific antibodies in pediatric kidney transplantation and methods to decrease antibody mediated injury. Her findings have been published in several peer-reviewed journals, and have been shared through book chapters, posters and presentations. She is on the editorial board of Frontiers in Pediatrics and is a peer reviewer for several journals including Transplantation, Pediatric Transplantation and Human Immunology. She also serves as a research mentor for fellows interested in kidney transplant research.</p><p>Dr. Hayde is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. She has several national roles including the associate councilor of region 9 of United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the executive committee of the pediatric community of practice of the American Society of Transplantation. <p><strong>The Roles of Signaling Pathways in Adult Blood Development and Leukemia</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Gritsman lab studies the signal transduction pathways that affect the early fate decisions of adult hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) as they progress from an undifferentiated multipotent state to the generation of differentiated blood cells.&nbsp; When these early fate decisions go awry, this can lead to the formation of leukemia-initiating cells. We are interested in</span><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">&nbsp;how signaling pathways affect the self-renewal and differentiation of HSCs and malignant or pre-malignant stem cells in myeloid malignancies, such as acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).</span></p>
<p><strong>Roles of the PI3 kinase isoforms in adult blood development</strong></p>
<p>PI3 kinase (PI3K) is a lipid kinase that is important for the regulation of metabolism, the cell cycle, apoptosis, and protein synthesis. &nbsp;In hematopoietic cells, there are four isoforms of the catalytic subunit of PI3K, each encoded by a separate gene. &nbsp;Emerging evidence suggests that these isoforms have unique functions in normal and cancer cells, but may substitute for each other in some contexts.&nbsp; We have generated a series of mouse knockout models that allow us to study the roles of each of these isoforms individually in adult hematopoiesis.&nbsp; For example, we have found that the p110alpha isoform is most important for red cell development, but is not required in normal blood stem cells. We have now also generated compound knockout mice to determine the redundant roles of the PI3K isoforms in blood development. &nbsp;We recently reported that PI3K isoforms play important redundant roles during the hematopoietic stress response, such as after chemotherapy. However, deletion of all 3 Class IA PI3K isoforms leads to a phenotype with impaired HSC differentiation, resembling myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). We are studying how deletion of PI3K will impact normal HSC function, including self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation along different blood lineages by affecting processes such as autophagy and epigenetic regulation in HSCs.</p>
<p><strong>Roles of the PI3 kinase isoforms in leukemia</strong></p>
<p>Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a genetically diverse disease, but activation of the PI3K pathway has been reported in up to 80% of cases.&nbsp; A subset of AML cell lines and AML patient samples respond to PI3K pathway inhibitors, but it is unclear how patients should be selected for potential response to these inhibitors. &nbsp;We found that RAS-mutated myeloid leukemias are particularly dependent on the p110alpha isoform of PI3K, and that pharmacologic inhibition of p110alpha can be used to treat both RAS-mutated cell lines and RAS-mutated leukemia in mice. Furthermore, we use cell lines, patient samples, and mouse models of leukemia to investigate the mechanisms of resistance to PI3K inhibition, with the goal of identifying new drug targets and designing new combination treatments for leukemia that incorporate PI3K inhibitors.</p>
<p><strong>RON Kinase in Myeloproliferative Neoplasms</strong></p>
<p>The myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a group of diseases that are caused by kinase mutations in HSCs, which lead to uncontrolled proliferation of myeloid cells. The Philadelphia chromosome-negative MPNs are characterized by mutations in the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, and respond to JAK inhibitors, but resistance often develops. We recently discovered that the receptor Tyrosine kinase RON can physically interact with JAK2 in MPN cells, leading to potentiation of JAK/STAT signaling in resistant cells. Furthermore, we found that pharmacologic or genetic inactivation of RON can inhibit proliferation of MPN cells and re-sensitize resistant cells to JAK inhibitors.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: medium; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">&nbsp;</span><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The Gritsman lab&rsquo;s research interests include the contributions of signaling pathways to leukemic and pre-leukemic stem cell dormancy in minimal residual disease, which includes mechanisms of immune evasion. Furthermore, the Gritsman lab is interested in the roles of inflammatory signaling pathways and of the local microenvironment in bone marrow fibrosis, and in the evolution of myeloid neoplasms from the pre-malignant to malignant state. Our major goals are to identify opportunities for therapeutic targeting to prevent the transition from the pre-leukemic state to leukemia, or to eliminate minimal residual disease to prevent relapse.</span></p>
