Dr. Roy S. Chuck is an ophthalmologist, visual scientist and geneticist known for his stem cell and dry eye research, and work in corneal restoration. He chairs Einstein’s department of ophthalmology and visual sciences, one of only a handful of Asian-Americans to hold such a post in the U.S.
 
He also chairs the ophthalmology department at Montefiore Medical Center, overseeing tertiary care to adult and pediatric patients with diseases of the eye, with subspecialty expertise that includes neuro-ophthalmology, plastic surgery, and retina, cornea and glaucoma services. The department maintains a program of ongoing community outreach aimed at early detection and treatment of eye diseases.
 
Dr. Chuck is a cornea specialist with expertise in laser techniques for refractive eye conditions. He has deep research experience and holds multiple patents. His two main areas of research are corneal stem cell surgery and dry eye, the most common global eye disease. Recently, Dr. Chuck's team developed a unique mouse model of dry eye that allows animal testing of therapies. The model employs the use of botulinum toxin, commonly known as "botox," to block neurotransmitters in the tear-producing lacrimal gland. The resulting dry eye closely mimics that found in humans.
 
Dr. Chuck is a long-time stem cell investigator in connection with corneal transplantation and sight restoration. His work includes cutting-edge corneal stem cell surgery, which has a success rate of nearly 50-percent—one of the highest for stem cell surgery.  The operation is performed if the stem cell pool on the eye is wiped out through injury or a genetic condition. Without these regenerating cells, eye injuries, however small, result in opaque scars that reduce or even eliminate vision. Corneal stem cell surgery requires removing the scar tissue and transplanting donated corneal stem cells onto the eye. If successful, the introduced stem cells heal the wound and vision is restored.
 
At Einstein, Dr. Chuck is developing research centers focusing on ophthalmologic disorders including cataracts, ocular surface disease/dry eye, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and eye conditions associated with diabetes.

Biography

Roy S. Chuck, MD, PhD, is Chairman and Professor, Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Chuck’s clinical focus is in cornea and external diseases as well as refractive surgery.After earning his Bachelor of Science in engineering at University of California, Berkeley, in 1986, Dr. Chuck attended Columbia University, earning his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in 1993. He started his postdoctoral training at St. Mary’s Health Center, completing a yearlong internship in internal medicine in 1994. From then until 1998, he pursued a residency in ophthalmology at Washington University and Barnes Hospital, acting as chief resident in his final year. In 1999, he completed a yearlong fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California.Dr. Chuck’s research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals as well as shared through many abstracts, book chapters and podium and poster presentations. He has been an editor and served on the editorial boards of many publications including the Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, Journal of Refractive Surgery, Current Opinion in Ophthalmology and BMC Ophthalmology. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the major journal ARVO Translational Vision Science and Technology and is a member of the NIH National Eye Institute Council of Editors.Dr. Chuck is board certified and is a member of many local, national and international professional societies including the International Society for Refractive Surgery, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and the Manhattan Ophthalmological Society. He currently serves as Secretary for Quality of Care for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Deborah Campbell, MD, FAAP, is Professor of Pediatrics and Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and at attending neonatologist at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. She conducted the Low-birth-weight infant Evaluation and Assessment Program (LEAP) clinic from 1988 through December 2022 and served as the Chief of Neonatology from 1994 until 2023. Her research and clinical interests include health services delivery, global perinatal heath care, perinatal ethics, shared decision-making and palliative care education, family integrated care in the neonatal intensive care unit and neonatal outcomes for very preterm and medically complex infants.  
Dr. Campbell is a member of the Academic Pediatric Society and a fellow at the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academic Pediatric Association. Dr. Campbell has an active role in perinatal activities at the NY City and State, and national levels, currently serving on the Hospice & Palliative Care Association of NYS Children's Advisory Group, the NYS Perinatal Quality Collaborative Neonatal Expert Workgroup, NYS DOH Maternity Care Clinical Advisory Group, the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine High-Risk Infant Follow-up Workgroup, The Bronx Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Committee and the Bronx Maternal Health Care Steering Committee.  
 Dr. Campbell co-chaired the Bright Futures Guidelines, 4th edition Infancy Expert Panel (2017) and serves as an editor of, and contributor to, the American Academy of Pediatrics Textbook of Pediatric Care, the electronic companion tool, Pediatric Care On-line and the Quick Reference Guide to Pediatric Care, Neonatal Care: A Quick Reference Deck and the textbook, Neonatology for Primary Care.

Dr. Campbell, Program Director for the fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Director of the Division of Neonatology at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, conducts the Low Birth Weight Infant Evaluation and Assessment Program (LEAP). She focuses on perinatal care and health services delivery, psychosocial support interventions for mothers of premature babies, perinatal ethics and collaborative decision-making, outcomes for very low birth weight infants and newborn hearing screening. She is a co-chair of the Faculty Mentoring Work Group of the Education and Faculty Support Committee at Einstein and led a faculty development initiative within the Department of Pediatrics.A member of the National March of Dimes Bioethics Committee and NICU Family Support Project Advisory Group, Dr. Campbell also serves on the New York City and Bronx Infant Mortality Review Committees and is a co-chair of the Bronx Regional Perinatal Forum. She is a member of the Greater New York Hospital Association Perinatal Safety Collaborative Advisory Group and the National Quality Forum Perinatal Collaborative and the New York State Obstetric and Neonatal Quality Collaborative, Neonatology Expert Workgroup. Dr. Campbell also serves on the New York State Palliative Care Education and Training Council. Dr. Campbell is the recipient of the 2000 Bronx Perinatal Consortium Distinguished Clinical Care Award, the 2005 New York State Perinatal Association L. Stanley James Award and the 2009 National Perinatal Association Stan Graven Award. She has been recognized by Castle Connolly and the New York Magazine in their lists of Best Doctors.

Anne Barmettler, MD, is Director, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division and Professor, Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Surgery at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Barmettler’s clinical specialty is oculoplastic surgery, which involves plastic and reconstructive surgery of the upper face, eyelids, orbit (bony cavity around the eye), and lacrimal (tear) system.After earning her Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry at Bowdoin College in 2003, Dr. Barmettler pursued her Doctor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, Jefferson Medical College, earning the degree in 2008. Her postdoctoral training began with a yearlong internship at Crozer Chester Medical Center, which she completed in 2009 before beginning a three-year residency in ophthalmology at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical College. She then undertook a competitive two-year fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery from 2012 to 2014, training at William Beaumont Hospital, Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University and Consultants in Ophthalmic Facial Plastic Surgery.Dr. Barmettler's research builds on her clinical interests in the treatment of conditions of the eyelid, orbit and lacrimal system. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles of original research, textbook chapters and review papers. She is routinely invited to give lectures and presentations at national and international meetings. Dr. Barmettler has been recognized for her dedication to research and now acts on the editorial board for the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery's journal of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. She also serves as Editor for the American Academy of Ophthalmology website, Eyewiki, and is a peer-reviewer for many journals, including JAMA Ophthalmology, Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine, Orbit, BMJ Open, American Journal of Ophthalmology Case Reports, and Clinical Ophthalmology.Dr. Barmettler is board certified and a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Asian Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology, New York Ophthalmological Society, and the North American Society of Academic Orbital Surgeons. She is one of only 800 surgeons that are a member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), passing both written and oral exams and a peer-reviewed thesis on spacer graft in lower eyelid retraction surgery. This research was recognized by the official national ophthalmology society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, being awarded “Best of ASOPRS" in 2017.
