<p>Dr. Shlomo Shinnar is a neurologist, pediatrician and epidemiologist. His expertise focuses on comprehensive epilepsy management, child neurology and epilepsy with a focus on long term studies&nbsp; the prognosis of childhood seizures disorders. He is also an experienced clinical trialist and is the co-director of the Einstein NeuroNEXT cener of Excellence for Clinical Trials in Neurology.<br /><br />Dr. Shinnar conducts research on a variety of topics relating to childhood seizures, including when to initiate and discontinue antiepileptic drug therapy, prognosis following a first seizure, and prognosis following discontinuation of medications in children with seizures.&nbsp;He is also interested in the comorbidities of epilepsy and its impact on chilren and families.&nbsp;He current studies focus on status epilepticus, a life-threatening condition of persistent continuous and unremitting brain seizure lasting longer than 30 minutes.&nbsp; He is also involved in research in autism, an increasingly common neurological condition in childhood.<br /><br />His current research focuses on the consequences of prolonged febrile seizures, the most common seizure seen in children and on the long term outcomes of childhood absence (petit-mal) seizures which are the most common form of epilepsy in children. He is also on the executive commitee of the recentlyfunded ESETT (Established Status Epilepticus Treatment Trial) trial which seeks to determine the optimal therapy for convulsive status epilepticus inchildren and adults when first line therapy with a benzodiazepine has failed.</p>
<p>Dr. Shinnar is the senior editor of the book <em>Childhood Seizures</em> and co-editor of the book <em>Febrile Seizures</em>. He has published over 185 original papers and over 125 reviews and chapters. He is the recipient of the prestigious Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society and the CURE&nbsp; research award. His continuing research on the Consequences of Prolonged Febrile Seizures in Children (FEBSTAT) study was recently recognized with the prestigious Javits award by the NINDS.<br /><br /></p>

Biography

<p>Rishi Malhotra, MD, is Director of Neurocritical Care, Director of the Neuroscience ICU and Director of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship, as well as Associate Professor of Neurology, Medicine and Neurological Surgery at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Malhotra&rsquo;s clinical focus includes the critical care management of subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, acute spinal cord injury, ischemic stroke, status epilepticus, brain tumors, neuromuscular respiratory failure and central nervous system infections.</p><p>A graduate of the combined BA/MD program at Brooklyn College, Dr. Malhotra completed his Doctor of Medicine with State University of New York - Downstate Medical Center in 2004. After completing his internal medicine internship at St. Luke&rsquo;s-Roosevelt Hospital in 2005, Dr. Malhotra completed his three-year neurology residency at Columbia University Medical Center in 2008. He then pursued a neurocritical care fellowship at Columbia University Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medical Center, which he completed in 2010.</p><p>Dr. Malhotra&rsquo;s scholarly interests include intracerebral hemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and status epilepticus. <p>Dr. Danielle Fernandes is an assistant professor of pediatrics and pediatric hospitalist at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. Prior to joining Einstein, she served as the Site Director for the pediatrics clerkship at New York Medical College/Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. She joined the Einstein faculty in 2019 and in 2022, she became Course Director for the Bioethics course for medical students. She also co-facilitates bioethics, humanism and professionalism sessions for the pediatric residents at CHAM. She is interested in curriculum development and keeping our curriculum up to date with the ethical issues around us. Dr. Fernandes is a graduate of Cornell University and received her medical degree from Columbia University. She completed her residency training at New York Presbyterian at Columbia. Dr. Fernandes is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and member of the AAP Section on Bioethics subgroup.</p>

Biography

<p>Danielle M. Fernandes, MD, is an Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Fernandes is a pediatric hospitalist committed to providing patient-focused and family-centered care to children admitted to the pediatric hospital medicine service.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in human biology, health and society from Cornell University in 2010, Dr. Fernandes earned her Doctor of Medicine at Columbia University in 2014. Following this, she completed her pediatric residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University in 2017. Given her interest in bioethics, Dr. Fernandes later earned a certificate in bioethics at Montefiore Einstein in 2023.</p><p>Dr. Fernandes co-facilitates bioethics, humanism and professionalism sessions for the pediatric residents at The Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore. Her research is focused on curriculum development and medical education. She also teaches Bioethics to medical students at the medical school. Dr. Fernandes has served as Interim Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency program and has focused on efforts to improve social determinants of health screening in the inpatient hospital setting. Her work has been shared through numerous peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and presentations.</p><p>Dr. Fernandes is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the American Society of Bioethics and Humanities.</p>
