Peter Dicpinigaitis, M.D., is a Professor of Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Division of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Dicpinigaitis has been active in the field of cough research for over 25 years. Dr. Dicpinigaitis and colleagues have developed methods of cough reflex sensitivity measurement with the tussive agent capsaicin that have been adopted in international guidelines as the proposed standard method of cough challenge testing.

Using this methodology, Dr. Dicpinigaitis has performed numerous studies to evaluate potential antitussive drugs; to evaluate the effect of non-pharmacological interventions such as cigarette smoking and viral infections on cough reflex sensitivity.

Dr. Dicpinigaitis is founder and director of the Montefiore Cough Center, one of the few specialty centers in the world dedicated to the evaluation and management of patients with chronic cough. He is a co-author of cough management guidelines published by the American College of Chest Physicians and the European Respiratory Society, and is the founder and chairman of the bi-annual American Cough Conference. Dr. Dicpinigaitis also serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal LUNG.
