Biography

<p>Jonathan M. Gursky, MD, is an Attending Physician at Montefiore and Assistant Professor of Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His clinical focus is on the diagnosis and treatment of adults and adolescents with epilepsy and seizure disorders.</p><p>After earning his Bachelor of Science at Cornell University in 2010, Dr. Gursky attended the New York University School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 2014. He began his postgraduate training in 2014 with a year-long internship in internal medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He continued his training at this institution and completed a residency in neurology in 2018, becoming Chief Resident in his final year. In 2019, Dr. Gursky completed a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at Montefiore.</p><p>Expanding on his clinical focus, Dr. Gursky&rsquo;s research examines the interactions between epilepsy with various neurological and general medical disorders. His findings have been published in peer-reviewed journals and articles and have been shared at national lectures and presentations.</p><p>Dr. Gursky holds additional clinical interests in the effects of epilepsy on mental and behavioral health.</p><p>Dr. Gursky is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and the American Epilepsy Society and is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. </p>

<p>Elissa B. Gross, DO, MPH, is an attending physician at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical focus is on the care of children admitted to the general pediatrics service as well as co-management of patients on the surgical subspecialty services.</p><p>After receiving her Bachelor of Arts at Yeshiva University, Stern College for Women in 1998, Dr. Gross attended Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning her Doctor of Osteopathy in 2002. For her postgraduate training, she completed her pediatric residency in 2005 at Children&rsquo;s Hospital Medical Center of Akron, then pursued a pediatric academic fellowship and her Master of Public Health at University of Minnesota, completing both in 2008.</p><p>Dr. Gross&rsquo; research focuses include asthma and breastfeeding and how being hospitalized impacts children and families. She has shared her work through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, abstracts, poster presentations and invited presentations. She also has served as a reviewer for Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Journal of Asthma and Pediatrics.</p><p>Dr. Gross is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. <p>The maturation of GABA<sub>A</sub><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>receptor-mediated signaling from depolarizing to inhibitory is an age-related process controlled by cation chloride cotransporters, such as KCC2. As a result, GABA exerts dual functions, being an important neurotrophic factor during early development and the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter of the mature central nervous system. In our laboratory we have been investigating the age mechanisms through which early life stressors and seizures may disrupt the normal patterns of brain development, by disrupting the neurotrophic effects of GABA. We are also studying methods to reverse these adverse processes. Furthermore, we are very interested in understanding how epileptogenesis proceeds in the developing brain and what is the specific role of GABA<sub>A</sub><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>receptors in this process.</p>
<p>To better understand the pathophysiology and design better methods to treat catastrophic early life epilepsies, we are developing and studying new models of early life epilepsy. These include models of symptomatic infantile spasms that recapitulate most of the features of the human condition. Several projects are under way to (a) elucidate the pathophysiology of infantile spasms, and (b) conduct preclinical trials to find better treatments for spasms and the associated comorbidities. Our studies have provided preclinical evidence for new potential treatments with disease modifying properties for these early life epileptic encephalopathies, such as mTOR inhibitor, carisbamate and a new vigabatrin analog.</p>
<p>Post-traumatic epilepsy is a common consequence of traumatic brain injury leading to high morbidity and morbidity. Our lab is participating in an international multicenter preclinical consortium, EpiBioS4Rx, leading efforts to develop better therapies for post-traumatic epilepsy. We use a rodent model of traumatic brain injury to identify targets and test for better therapies, through a combination of expression studies, in vivo behavioral and electrophysiologic monitoring and therapy screening to identify antiepileptogenic compounds. Furthermore, through a separate project, we are looking into factors predicting epilepsy and behavioral outcomes after traumatic brain injury.</p>
<p>Genetic etiologies are often identified in patients with epilepsies. Our lab has been investigating genes involved in lissencephaly associated epilepsies and developmental disorders as well as Rett syndrome which is due to MeCP2 gene mutations. Through the use of mouse models we have been investigating genotype-phenotype correlations and mechanisms involved with the ultimate goal of testing therapies.</p>
<p>Students interested in these projects will gain exposure to a variety of<span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>in vivo</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>and<span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>in vitro</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>techniques that combine molecular biology<em>, in vivo</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>and<span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>in vitro</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>electrophysiology, histological, and behavioral studies and will be involved in projects with direct translational relevance to the clinical practice, i.e. identification of novel therapies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr. Danielle Fernandes is an assistant professor of pediatrics and pediatric hospitalist at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore. Prior to joining Einstein, she served as the Site Director for the pediatrics clerkship at New York Medical College/Maria Fareri Children's Hospital. She joined the Einstein faculty in 2019 and in 2022, she became Course Director for the Bioethics course for medical students. She also co-facilitates bioethics, humanism and professionalism sessions for the pediatric residents at CHAM. She is interested in curriculum development and keeping our curriculum up to date with the ethical issues around us. Dr. Fernandes is a graduate of Cornell University and received her medical degree from Columbia University. She completed her residency training at New York Presbyterian at Columbia. Dr. Fernandes is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hospital medicine. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and member of the AAP Section on Bioethics subgroup.</p>

<p>Danielle M. Fernandes, MD, is an Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Fernandes is a pediatric hospitalist committed to providing patient-focused and family-centered care to children admitted to the pediatric hospital medicine service.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in human biology, health and society from Cornell University in 2010, Dr. Fernandes earned her Doctor of Medicine at Columbia University in 2014. Following this, she completed her pediatric residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital at Columbia University in 2017. Given her interest in bioethics, Dr. Fernandes later earned a certificate in bioethics at Montefiore Einstein in 2023.</p><p>Dr. Fernandes co-facilitates bioethics, humanism and professionalism sessions for the pediatric residents at The Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore. Her research is focused on curriculum development and medical education. She also teaches Bioethics to medical students at the medical school. Dr. Fernandes has served as Interim Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency program and has focused on efforts to improve social determinants of health screening in the inpatient hospital setting. Her work has been shared through numerous peer-reviewed publications, abstracts and presentations.</p><p>Dr. Fernandes is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. <p>Ronda Facchini, PhD, is Director, Neuropsychology Externship Training Program at Montefiore Einstein and Instructor, Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Facchini's clinical focus is on clinical neuropsychology across the lifespan with a particular focus on pediatric neuropsychology.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in medical psychology from Bridgewater State College in 1983, Dr. Facchini completed medical sciences courses including physiology and chemistry at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in 1984. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy in health psychology at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology in 1995. Dr. Facchini completed an internship and post-doctoral training in neuropsychology at Montefiore in 1997.</p><p>Building on her clinical focus, Dr. Facchini&rsquo;s research interests include neurodevelopmental disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and neuropsychological components of medical conditions. Biography

<p>Susan Duberstein, MD, is Associate Professor, Child Neurology and Pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Duberstein is an epileptologist with a special interest in complex care. She is the collaborating neurologist for the Linking Individual Needs of Children with Services (LINCS) clinic, which provides a &ldquo;medical home&rdquo; and family-centered care for children with chronic illnesses, multiple conditions and medical technologies. She is also the Associate Director of the Neurocutaneous Clinic, serving children with neurofibromatosis, Sturge-Weber, tuberous sclerosis complex and other neurocutaneous conditions.</p><p>After earning her Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 2008, Dr. Duberstein completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at the same institution in 2010. She then came to Montefiore Einstein to continue her medical training, completing her residency in child neurology in 2013 and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and electroencephalography (EEG) in 2014.</p><p>Dr. Duberstein's research focuses include retrospective studies on neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis complex. She is also one of the leaders of a research project investigating the clinical outcomes of autoimmune encephalopathies. Her work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and abstracts.</p><p>Dr. Duberstein is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Neurology with a special qualification in Child Neurology and holds a subspecialty certificate in Epilepsy. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Child Neurology Society and the American Epilepsy Society. Dr. Duberstein was elected a Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society in 2022.</p>

<p>Gina Cassel-Choudhury, DO, is Director, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Quality &amp; Safety Council, Assistant Medical Director, Patient Safety, and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and Montefiore Einstein. Her focus at CHAM is a multidisciplinary approach to the introduction and maintenance of quality improvement initiatives which promote patient safety.</p><p>After earning her Bachelor of Science in 2003, Dr. Cassel-Choudhury attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, receiving her Doctor of Osteopathy in 2007. She began her postgraduate training with an internship and residency at North Shore-LIJ, Cohen Children&rsquo;s Hospital from 2007 to 2010. Following this, she came to CHAM for a three-year fellowship in pediatric critical care, which she completed in 2013.</p><p>Dr. Cassel-Choudhury&rsquo;s research focus revolves around the standardization, implementation and maintenance of guidelines to optimize patient safety. Such work has included a protocol for enteral feeding of patients on high-flow nasal cannula, a standardized algorithm to prevent iatrogenic drug withdrawal and protocol-driven management of convulsive status epilepticus. She has shared her work through peer-reviewed journals, abstracts and presentations.</p><p>Dr. Cassel-Choudhury is board-certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Critical Care, Section on Pediatrics. She is also a member of the Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) network.</p>

Biography

<p>Dr. Alexis D. Boro coordinates the Epilepsy Surgery program at Montefiore Medical Center and oversees epilepsy fellowship education and the epilepsy clinical trials program. He has been an Investigator for studies involving the safety, tolerability and efficacy of a variety of epilepsy drugs. He is a co-investigator (EEG Core) of the Epilepsy Phenome/Genome Project, an international NIH funded project investigating the causes and inheritance of epilepsy and the determinants which anti-seizure medications will work best for a given individual.</p><p>Dr. Boro&rsquo;s primary interest is in providing care for adolescents and adults with epilepsy. His practice focuses on tailoring the evaluation and the treatment of epilepsy to meet the needs of the individual, from the diagnosis of "spells" of uncertain etiology, addressing quality-of-life issues in epilepsy, to medical and surgical therapies.&nbsp;</p><p>Dr. Boro&nbsp;completed medical school and internship at SUNY Stony Brook. He was resident and chief resident of Neurology at the the Mt. Sinai Medical Center. He joined the faculty at Montefiore Medical Center /Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2003 after completing a fellowship in Epilepsy and Neurophysiology there.</p>
