<p>Elissa G. Yozawitz, MD, is Director of Neonatal Neurology at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Yozawitz focuses on the neurological management of children, from the neonatal period through adolescence, particularly those with difficult-to-treat seizures. She also specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, stroke and seizures in the newborn. Dr. Yozawitz&rsquo;s expertise includes electroencephalography (EEG) and state-of-the-art treatments.</p><p>After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and in health and society from the University of Rochester in 2001, Dr. Yozawitz earned a Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in 2005. She completed a pediatric residency at Schneider Children&rsquo;s Hospital in 2007, followed by a residency in pediatric neurology at Montefiore Einstein in 2010. Dr. Yozawitz remained at Montefiore Einstein to complete a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology in 2011.</p><p>Dr. Yozawitz&rsquo;s research focuses on improving the identification and efficacy of treating early-life epilepsies, including infantile spasms. Her research also explores EEG changes during anesthesia. Dr. Yozawitz participated in multicenter studies, functioned as site principal investigator and co-investigator for multiple research projects, presented her research findings at national and international scientific meetings, published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and authored several book chapters. She served as a reviewer for medical journals including <em>Epilepsia, Epileptic Disorders, Neurology</em> and the <em>New England Journal of Medicine</em>, among others. For several years, Dr. Yozawitz participated in the work of international committees tasked to revise nosology and treatment guidelines for neonatal and childhood epilepsy.</p><p>Dr. Yozawitz is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Epilepsy and Neurology, with special certification in Child Neurology. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Epilepsy Society and the Child Neurology Society. <p>Jacqueline Weingarten-Arams, MD, is an attending physician and Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Weingarten-Arams&rsquo; pediatric critical care expertise focuses on cardiac critical care, acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, nutrition in critical illness and energy expenditure, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (quality CPR) and extracorporeal life support (ECMO).</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University in 1982, Dr. Weingarten-Arams earned her Doctor of Medicine at the same institution in 1986. She then completed her pediatric residency at Columbia University in 1990, where she was Chief Resident in her final year. Following this, Dr. Weingarten-Arams completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at New York Hospital Cornell University Medical College in 1996.</p><p>Dr. Weingarten-Arams research focus includes the use of deliberate simulated practice in improving outcomes in pediatric critical illness, pediatric resuscitation and pediatric airway management. Her other projects involve chronic critical illness, bioethics in pediatric critical care and oxidative injury in respiratory failure. She has been principal investigator and co-investigator on several research projects, and her work has been shared through numerous peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations.</p><p>Dr. Weingarten-Arams is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Pediatrics. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Chest Physicians. She is also a member of several professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. <p>Dr. Ushay is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as a Fellow of the American College of Critical Care Medicine. </p><p>After obtaining a PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University, Dr. Ushay received his MD from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and completed a Pediatrics residency in the Montefiore-Jacobi-Einstein program. After serving as Chief Resident and a Fellow in Pediatric Pulmonology at Montefiore, he completed a Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center in 1993. He was a faculty member at NewYork-Presbyterian and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospitals from 1993 to 2005, and he served as Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program Director and Medical Director of the Pediatric Observation Unit at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. </p><p>In 2005 Dr. Ushay became Director of the Pediatric Critical Care Unit in The Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore. Dr. Ushay is involved in increasing pediatric ICU surge capacity through the New York City Pediatric Disaster Coalition, serving on its Central Leadership Council and teaching the Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support Course. Through the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Dr. Ushay works on employing medical countermeasures safely for children in the event of chemical, biological or radiological disaster. Sponsored by Surgeons of Hope and Children&rsquo;s HeartLink, Dr. Ushay has worked as a cardiac intensivist in Cambodia, Africa, China and Nicaragua. </p>

<p>Dr. Shlomo Shinnar is a neurologist, pediatrician and epidemiologist. His expertise focuses on comprehensive epilepsy management, child neurology and epilepsy with a focus on long term studies&nbsp; the prognosis of childhood seizures disorders. He is also an experienced clinical trialist and is the co-director of the Einstein NeuroNEXT cener of Excellence for Clinical Trials in Neurology.<br /><br />Dr. Shinnar conducts research on a variety of topics relating to childhood seizures, including when to initiate and discontinue antiepileptic drug therapy, prognosis following a first seizure, and prognosis following discontinuation of medications in children with seizures.&nbsp;He is also interested in the comorbidities of epilepsy and its impact on chilren and families.&nbsp;He current studies focus on status epilepticus, a life-threatening condition of persistent continuous and unremitting brain seizure lasting longer than 30 minutes.&nbsp; He is also involved in research in autism, an increasingly common neurological condition in childhood.<br /><br />His current research focuses on the consequences of prolonged febrile seizures, the most common seizure seen in children and on the long term outcomes of childhood absence (petit-mal) seizures which are the most common form of epilepsy in children. He is also on the executive commitee of the recentlyfunded ESETT (Established Status Epilepticus Treatment Trial) trial which seeks to determine the optimal therapy for convulsive status epilepticus inchildren and adults when first line therapy with a benzodiazepine has failed.</p>
<p>Dr. Shinnar is the senior editor of the book <em>Childhood Seizures</em> and co-editor of the book <em>Febrile Seizures</em>. He has published over 185 original papers and over 125 reviews and chapters. He is the recipient of the prestigious Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society and the CURE&nbsp; research award. His continuing research on the Consequences of Prolonged Febrile Seizures in Children (FEBSTAT) study was recently recognized with the prestigious Javits award by the NINDS.<br /><br /></p>

<p>Puja Patel, MD, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Associate Professor, Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Patel's clinical focus is pediatric epilepsy, although she also sees patients with general pediatric neurological issues, including headaches, movement disorders, sleep concerns and developmental delay.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in biology from Barnard College in 2005, Dr. Patel earned her Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 2009. She completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in 2011. Following this, Dr. Patel came to Montefiore Einstein to continue her medical training, completing her pediatric neurology residency in 2014, a clinical neurophysiology fellowship in 2015 and a behavioral neurosciences fellowship in 2016.</p><p>Dr. Patel&rsquo;s research focuses on clinical seizure prediction in the pediatric population. She has been co-investigator in several clinical drug trials investigating new anti-seizure medications. Her work has been shared through invited presentations and peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters, review articles and abstracts. She is a reviewer for scientific journals, including <em>Epilepsy Research, the Journal of Neurological Sciences and Pediatric Neurology</em>, among others.</p><p>Dr. Patel is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Neurology with special competence in Child Neurology. She is a member of the Child Neurology Society and the American Epilepsy Society.</p>

<p>Samuel Gorstein, MD, is Director, Resident Education, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM) and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Gorstein&rsquo;s clinical focus is on the care of critically ill infants, children and adolescents, focusing on conditions requiring intensive monitoring, life support and complex interventions, such as respiratory failure, sepsis, trauma and post-surgical recovery.

<p>Susan Duberstein, MD, is Associate Professor, Child Neurology and Pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Duberstein is an epileptologist with a special interest in complex care. She is the collaborating neurologist for the Linking Individual Needs of Children with Services (LINCS) clinic, which provides a &ldquo;medical home&rdquo; and family-centered care for children with chronic illnesses, multiple conditions and medical technologies. She is also the Associate Director of the Neurocutaneous Clinic, serving children with neurofibromatosis, Sturge-Weber, tuberous sclerosis complex and other neurocutaneous conditions.</p><p>After earning her Doctor of Medicine at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 2008, Dr. Duberstein completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at the same institution in 2010. She then came to Montefiore Einstein to continue her medical training, completing her residency in child neurology in 2013 and a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology and electroencephalography (EEG) in 2014.</p><p>Dr. Duberstein's research focuses include retrospective studies on neurofibromatosis and tuberous sclerosis complex. She is also one of the leaders of a research project investigating the clinical outcomes of autoimmune encephalopathies. Her work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and abstracts.</p><p>Dr. Duberstein is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Neurology with a special qualification in Child Neurology and holds a subspecialty certificate in Epilepsy.
