Care of children before and after solid organ transplantation
<p>Mark Shlomovich, MD, is Director, Extracorporeal Liver Support and Director, Pediatric Critical Care Transport at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Shlomovich’s clinical focus is on the care of critically ill children with abdominal organ failure, transplantation and post-surgical care. He also focuses on the safe transportation of critically ill children.</p><p>In 2006, Dr. Shlomovich earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from Towson University. He then attended University of Connecticut School of Medicine earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2010. His postgraduate training began at SUNY Downstate Medical Center with a four-year pediatric residency, where he was Chief Pediatric Resident in his final year. He then came to Children's Hospital at Montefiore for a pediatric critical care fellowship, which he completed in 2017.</p><p>Dr. Shlomovich’s research interests are in the use of artificial liver support technology, as well as the care of children in liver failure before and after transplantation. In addition, he investigates the safety and efficiency of the transportation of critically ill children. He has shared his research through peer-reviewed journals and abstracts, and is an ad hoc reviewer for BMC Nephrology.</p><p>Dr. Shlomovich is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine. He is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>
Theresa M. Serra
Pediatric Medicine
<p class="MsoNormal">Theresa Serra, MD, joined the CHAM hospitalist division in 2014 after working as a pediatric hospitalist at New York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital. Her interests include clinical research and medical education. She has conducted an IRB approved retrospective chart review examining readmission rates in pediatric patients diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Dr. Serra is currently developing a medical Spanish curriculum for faculty members in order to improve communication between patients, families and providers. Along with Courtney McNamara, MD, Dr. Serra is a co-leader of a multidisciplinary committee dedicated to standardizing and improving quality of care for patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of failure to thrive. Dr. Serra is also working on an initiative to identify vaccine delinquency in the inpatient setting through the use of SMART reports.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Dr. Serra is also collaborating with Lindsey Douglas, MD, MSCR, in an IRB approved quality improvement (QI) project to improve transition-of-care communication between hospitalists and primary care providers and to facilitate the establishment of medical homes. Dr. Serra is also a member of a subcommittee that leads monthly journal clubs/case conferences for pediatric hospitalists.</p>

<p>Samuel J. Rednor, DO, is Director of Wellness, Critical Care and Assistant Professor, Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical focus is nephrology and critical care.</p><p>After earning his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013, Dr. Rednor completed his residency in internal medicine at Southampton Hospital in 2016, where he was Chief Resident for one year. He then completed his renal fellowship at Montefiore in 2018, where he was Chief Renal Fellow during his last year. Dr. Rednor went on to complete an additional fellowship at Montefiore in critical care, which he completed in 2019.</p><p>Dr. Rednor’s research focus is in acute kidney injury (AKI), cardiac arrest, and intubation. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has given multiple lectures and presentations.</p><p>Dr. Rednor is board certified in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Critical Care Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Nephrology (ASN), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST). In 2018, Dr. Rednor won the Sharon R. Silbiger Teaching Award for excellence in teaching and in recognition as Outstanding Fellow of the Year from Einstein.</p>
Marjan Rahmanian
<p><span>Dr. Marjan Rahmanian is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Neurology. She is an Associate Medical Director of Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at Montefiore Medical Center. She is also Medical Director of Physician Assistant Critical Care Residency program. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Hackensack Meridian Mountainside Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center. After completing her training, she joined the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where she served as an Associate Director of Cardiothoracic Surgical ICU at Montefiore Medical center. As a cardiac intensivist, Dr. Rahmanian focuses on the management of post heart surgery like CABG, valve replacemant, Mechanical Circulatory Support like,ECMO, LVAD,Impella, heart and lung transplant.</p>

Maja H. Oktay
<p>Maja Oktay, MD/Ph.D., is a physician-scientist. She is a board-certified anatomical pathologist and cytopathologist with a Ph.D. and post-doctoral training in cancer cell biology and cell signaling pathways. Her major interests are in cancer cell biology, the biology of breast cancer progression and metastasis, the effect of chemotherapy and endocrine therapy on the tumor microenvironment, racial disparity in cancer, as well as development of prognostic and predictive molecular biomarkers. Her work is based on the analysis of the cancer microenvironment using mouse models of cancer, intravital multiphoton imaging, and digital pathology as well as minimally invasive procedures for diagnosis and prognosis of human malignancies, such as fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy.</p>
<p>Dr. Oktay is a translational (bench to bedside) researcher in Einstein’s <a href="/research/integrated-imaging-program/">Integrated Imaging Program</a> where basic science findings are applied to clinical care through the integration and validation of high-resolution optical imaging with currently used clinical imaging methods.</p>
<p>Dr. Oktay established New York Pathology Oncology Group (NYPOG) and is the current director of NYPOG (https://einsteinmed.org/research/groups/ny-pathology-oncology/).</p>
<h3>Contribution to Science:</h3>
<p>Maja Oktay studies breast cancer microenvironments responsible for metastasis. In particular, the function of breast cancer intravasation sites called TMEM (Tumor MicroEnvironment of Metastasis) and its interactions with pro-metastatic Mena-expressing tumor cells and cancer stem cells. Using fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy obtained breast cancer cells from patients she determined that invasive cancer cells (MenaINV expressing) and cancer cells expressing stem cell markers correlate with TMEM score breast cancers from patients indicating mechanistic involvement of MenaINV, and stemness in TMEM function in human breast cancer. In addition, using FNA obtained cancer cells from patients for functional in vitro trans-endothelial migration studies she demonstrated that TMEM sites and MenaINV expression in cancer cells are essential for cancer cell trans-endothelial migration in all clinical subtypes of breast cancer. She also participated in the prospective validation study which demonstrated that TMEM score is a predictive marker of metastasis in breast cancer patients, as well as in the study which demonstrated that TMEM sites are functional sites of transient blood vessel permeability and as such the only sites of breast cancer cell intravasation. In addition, she led a study that established that commonly used chemotherapy for breast cancer can induce TMEM and MenaINV mediated pro-metastatic changes in breast cancer in the neoadjuvant setting and demonstrated that these changes can be reversed by Tie2 inhibition. More recently, Dr. Oktay co-led a study that elucidated the mechanism of induction of stem and invasive breast cancer cells. Using high-resolution intravital microscopy and a biosensor for cancer stem cells (CSC) the team also observed that CSCs display disseminating phenotype and using mouse and patient-derived breast cancers determined that tumor microenvironments, in particular around TMEM doorways, are sites of CSC induction.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">Throughout her career, Dr. Oktay served as a mentor to junior colleagues. She trained numerous individuals at various stages of their careers including high school students, MD/Ph.D. students, pathology residents, and cytopathology fellows, as well as post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty. During the past 10 years, she trained 5 pre- and 15 post-doctorates, all of whom have continued in research or research-related careers. Moreover, she has been mentoring T32 fellows since 2015, with 7 trainees in total. Most of the training interactions have resulted in publications or grant submissions and funded grants. </span></p>

<p>Katherine O’Connor, MD, is an Associate Director in the Division of Hospital Medicine and an Attending Pediatric Hospitalist at Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. O’Connor joined Montefiore in 2007.</p><p>Dr. O’Connor received her Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Neuroscience in 1999 from Harvard University. In 2003, she received her Medical Doctorate from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. O’Connor attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 2003 to 2007 where she completed an internship and residency in pediatrics.</p><p>Dr. O’Connor is an advocate for patient and family comfort. Her research and quality improvement efforts are focused on pain control, topical anesthetic use for venipuncture and improving the patient experience. She is currently working on a study to help educate families about firearm injury prevention in the inpatient setting. Dr. O’Connor’s work has been published in multiple manuscripts and book chapters. </p><p>Dr. O’Connor is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>
Amanda C. North
<p>Amanda North graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in Religion and a certificate in Latin American Studies. She went on to medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she was elected AOA and awarded the Montefiore Staff and Alumni Award at graduation.</p>
<p>She went on to complete a residency in Urology at Montefiore Medical Center. She spent 2 years in Baltimore completing a fellowship in Pediatric Urology was at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She has been an Assistant Professor of Pediatric Urology at Montefiore Medical Center for the past 5 years. Her professional interests include general pediatric urology with on focus on perinatal issues in urology, including prenatal consultations.<br /><br /></p>

<p>Amanda C. North, MD, Professor of Urology, is an expert in Pediatric Urology who specializes in the care and treatment of children with complex voiding problems and congenital anomalies of the urinary tract. Dr. North earned her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha); she subsequently trained in General Surgery and Urology in the Einstein/Montefiore program . Dr. North completed fellowship training in Pediatric Urology at Johns Hopkins University and joined the faculty of The Department of Urology at Montefiore in 2007.</p><p>Dr. North is the recipient of the Montefiore Staff and Alumni Association Award. Dr. North is a member of the American Urological Association and Society for Pediatric Urology. Dr. North is fluent in Spanish.</p>
