Biography

<p>Michel Nassar, MD, MSc, is Director, AeroDigestive Program at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore, and Co-Director, CranioFacial Clinic and Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Nassar takes a multidisciplinary approach to patients with complex aerodigestive disease. His clinical interests include minimally invasive airway surgery and reconstruction, and the medical and surgical management of pediatric hearing loss, including endoscopic ear surgery, cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids (BAHA). He also has expertise in the medical and surgical management of velopharyngeal disorders.</p><p>Dr. Nassar earned his medical degree at Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon in 2005. He began his postgraduate training in France, completing an otolaryngology residency at Hotel Dieu de France Hospital in 2010 and his Masters in Surgical Sciences and pediatric otolaryngology fellowship in 2012. He then came to the United States, completing a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Cincinnati Children&rsquo;s Hospital in 2013.</p><p>In addition to his interests in the use of simulation in medical education, Dr. Nassar also has an interest in congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) and hearing loss, including targeted CMV screening and the use of Valganciclovir for CMV-infected hearing-impaired infants (ValEAR). His work has been shared through peer-reviewed journals and oral presentations. <p>Norah Li , MD, is Assistant Medical Director, Pediatrics at Montefiore Einstein. <p>Dr. Kobets is an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and an Attending Pediatric and Adult Neurosurgeon in the Montefiore Health System. Dr. Kobets received his Medical Doctorate and Master of Health Science degrees from the Yale School of Medicine and completed a Fellowship in Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Kobets is the first in his family born in the United States and is from Queens, NY. His family is Ukrainian with roots in Siberia as well. <p>Andrew Joshua Kobets, MD, is Attending Physician at Montefiore and Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Kobets specializes in pediatric neurological surgery with a focus on minimally invasive tumor resection, neuro-endoscopy for hydrocephalus, craniofacial reconstruction, Chiari malformation surgery, tethered cord syndrome repair, and pediatric cranial trauma management.</p><p>In 2005, Dr. Kobets received his Bachelor of Arts in systems neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University. From 2007 to 2012, he attended Yale University. During this time, he received his Master of Health Sciences and Doctor of Medicine. Dr. Kobets began his postgraduate training in 2012 at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and continued to train there until 2019. He began with a year-long internship in neurological surgery. He then completed a 6-year residency in neurological surgery, becoming Chief Resident in the final year. In 2019, Dr. Kobets began a year-long fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.</p><p>Dr. Kobets&rsquo; research aims to develop a model of hydrocephalus secondary to intraventricular hemorrhage to trial the use of cutting-edge therapies to prevent life-long shunt dependence in children with hydrocephalus. His work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, books and abstracts, and has been presented internationally at invited presentations.</p><p>The Norma Bailey Berniker Prize was given to Dr. Kobets by the Yale School of Medicine in 2012. In 2018, Dr. Kobets received the Fred Epstein Award from the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery. The following year, he received the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award for Outstanding Medical Student Education.</p><p>Dr. Kobets is a member of numerous professional societies, including the AANS/CNS Section on Pediatric Neurological Surgery, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery. </p>

<p>Neil Haranhalli, MD, is an Endovascular/Cerebrovascular Neurosurgeon at Montefiore and an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Haranhalli specializes in the endovascular and open surgical treatment of cerebrovascular disease, including cerebral aneurysms, carotid artery stenosis, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, cerebral and spinal arteriovenous malformations, and chronic subdural hematomas.</p><p>In 2007, Dr. Haranhalli received his Bachelor of Arts in neuroscience at New York University. He then attended New York University School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 2012. Dr. Haranhalli began his postgraduate training in 2012 with a 7-year internship and residency in neurological surgery at Montefiore, where he became Chief Resident in his final year. During this time, he also completed a year-long endovascular neurosurgery fellowship in 2018 at Mayo Clinic.</p><p>Dr. Haranhalli&rsquo;s research interests include studying functional outcomes in patients who suffer either ischemic stroke and/or aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, efficacy of endovascular treatment of chronic subdural hematomas, quality measures for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke with mechanical thrombectomy and the use of advanced imaging in decision making, and prognostication of patients with acute ischemic stroke. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, and presented nationally.</p>

<p>Elissa B. Gross, DO, MPH, is an attending physician at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her clinical focus is on the care of children admitted to the general pediatrics service as well as co-management of patients on the surgical subspecialty services.</p><p>After receiving her Bachelor of Arts at Yeshiva University, Stern College for Women in 1998, Dr. Gross attended Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, earning her Doctor of Osteopathy in 2002. For her postgraduate training, she completed her pediatric residency in 2005 at Children&rsquo;s Hospital Medical Center of Akron, then pursued a pediatric academic fellowship and her Master of Public Health at University of Minnesota, completing both in 2008.</p><p>Dr. Gross&rsquo; research focuses include asthma and breastfeeding and how being hospitalized impacts children and families. She has shared her work through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, abstracts, poster presentations and invited presentations. She also has served as a reviewer for Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Journal of Asthma and Pediatrics.</p><p>Dr. Gross is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society of Hospital Medicine.</p>

<p>Dr. Karen Ballaban-Gil is Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics, the Director of the Child Neurology Residency Training Program and Director of Outpatient Child Neurology Services at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Union College and Cum Laude from Albany Medical College, in the 6 year combined B.S- M.D. program. Dr. Ballaban-Gil trained in general pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and trained in child neurology and clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She received board certifications in pediatrics, neurology with special competence in child neurology , clinical neurophysiology and in epilepsy.</p>
<p><br />Dr. Ballaban-Gil has a large clinical practice in child neurology, including the evaluation and treatment of children with epilepsy, headaches, sleep disorders, autism and other developmental disabilities. Her research interests include the relationship between epilepsy and language regression in youngsters with Landau-Kleffner Syndrome, autism, and other developmental disorders of higher cognitive functioning. In addition, she runs the Ketogenic Diet program for the management of intractable epilepsy at the Montefiore Medical Center - Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.
