Biography

<p>Mark Shlomovich, MD, is Director, Extracorporeal Liver Support and Director, Pediatric Critical Care Transport at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Shlomovich&rsquo;s clinical focus is on the care of critically ill children with abdominal organ failure, transplantation and post-surgical care. He also focuses on the safe transportation of critically ill children.</p><p>In 2006, Dr. Shlomovich earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from Towson University. He then attended University of Connecticut School of Medicine earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2010. His postgraduate training began at SUNY Downstate Medical Center with a four-year pediatric residency, where he was Chief Pediatric Resident in his final year. He then came to Children's Hospital at Montefiore for a pediatric critical care fellowship, which he completed in 2017.</p><p>Dr. Shlomovich&rsquo;s research interests are in the use of artificial liver support technology, as well as the care of children in liver failure before and after transplantation. In addition, he investigates the safety and efficiency of the transportation of critically ill children. He has shared his research through peer-reviewed journals and abstracts, and is an ad hoc reviewer for BMC Nephrology.</p><p>Dr. Shlomovich is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine. He is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>

As a clinician-educator he serves as the director of critical care ultrasonography.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background: white;">After receiving his medical degree from the Medical School for International Health at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in 2005, he completed both his Internal Medicine residency and Critical Care Medicine fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Shiloh joined the Montefiore/Einstein Critical Care faculty in 2010.&nbsp;</p>

Biography

<p>Ariel L Shiloh, MD, is Director, Critical Care Consult Services, Professor, Medicine and Associate Professor, Neurology at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Shiloh&rsquo;s clinical interests include the early detection and treatment of critical illness, point-of-care ultrasonography for the evaluation of critical illness and advanced airway management.</p><p>After earning his Bachelor of Arts from Yeshiva University, Dr. Shiloh attended the Medical School for International Health at Ben Gurion University, Be&rsquo;er Sheva, Israel, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2005. He came to Montefiore for his postdoctoral training, completing his internship and residency in internal medicine in 2008, followed by his fellowship in critical care medicine in 2010.</p><p>Dr. Shiloh's research includes the clinical use of point-of-care ultrasonography in critical illness, improvement of airway management, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals, invited presentations, books, abstracts and poster presentations at national conferences. He has also been a reviewer for several journals including <em>Chest</em>, the <em>American Journal of Critical Care</em> and the <em>European Journal of Anesthesiology</em>.</p><p>Dr. Shiloh is board certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Neurocritical Care and Hospice &amp; Palliative Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. <p></p>Deep Sharma, MBBS, earned his medical degree from University College of Medical Sciences in Delhi, India. He then completed his residency and chief residency at Good Samaritan Hospital, Baltimore followed by his nephrology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center where he joined as faculty after completion of his fellowship. He is board certified in Medicine and Nephrology and is a member of the American Society of Nephrology. Dr. Sharma is the clinical director of Nephrology for Weiler Hospital and the medical director of Fresenius Eastchester and Fresenius Freedom Center of the Bronx that treats patients who need dialysis for End Stage Kidney disease, both incenter and at home. With the help of his Urology colleagues, he helped establish the kidney stone program at Montefiore and that sees patients with kidneys stones in the clinic. Dr. Sharma has been involved in clinical studies looking at muscle mass in patients with kidney disease and the treatment of anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease and dialysis.<p></p>

<p>Dr. Matthew Shaines completed a medical degree at SUNY Downstate Medical Center - Brooklyn and an internal medicine residency at Montefiore/Einstein. He was then recruited to the Einstein faculty at Montefiore and became one of the initial group of hospitalists who founded the Teaching Hospitalist Program at Montefiore in 2004.</p>
<p>Dr. Shaines has served as Assistant Director of the Hospitalist Service, managing the Moses Teaching Hospitalist Program; founding Director of the Medicine Consult Service, creating a dedicated medicine consult rotation for the housestaff, with a mission of high quality service and education on topics pertaining to consultative and perioperative medicine; Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, serving as a liaison between the program and the Division of Hospital Medicine. In 2018 he was appointed as the Associate Chief of Hospital Medicine for Education.</p>
<p>His teaching and academic interests are in clinical reasoning, quality improvement and faculty development. <p class="MsoNormal">Theresa Serra, MD, joined the CHAM hospitalist division in 2014 after working as a pediatric hospitalist at New York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital. Her interests include clinical research and medical education. She has conducted an IRB approved retrospective chart review examining readmission rates in pediatric patients diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Dr. Serra is currently developing a medical Spanish curriculum for faculty members in order to improve communication between patients, families and providers. Along with Courtney McNamara, MD, Dr. Serra is a co-leader of a multidisciplinary committee dedicated to standardizing and improving quality of care for patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of failure to thrive. Dr. Serra is also working on an initiative to identify vaccine delinquency in the inpatient setting through the use of SMART reports.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Dr. Serra is also collaborating with Lindsey Douglas, MD, MSCR, in an IRB approved quality improvement (QI) project to improve transition-of-care communication between hospitalists and primary care providers and to facilitate the establishment of medical homes. <p>Dr. Sankin is an academic surgeon in the Department of Urology, at Montefiore Medical Center with a clinical focus on surgical approaches to the management of urologic malignancies of the upper urinary tract and bladder. Biography

<p>Alexander I. Sankin, MD, is Associate Professor, Urology at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical specialty is surgical approaches to treating urological malignancies, including prostate, testicular, renal and bladder cancer.</p><p>After earning his Master of Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 2004, Dr. Sankin earned his Doctor of Medicine from New York University in 2008 and completed his residency in surgery and urology at the State University of New York Downstate in 2013. He then completed a fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2015.</p><p>Building on his clinical focus, Dr. Sankin&rsquo;s research centers on bladder-preserving treatment options in patients with high-risk bladder cancer and the development of new immunotherapies for bladder cancer. He is the site-principal investigator for multiple clinical trials studying novel therapeutics for patients with bladder cancer who wish to avoid radical cystectomy. As an active member of multiple clinical trial consortiums, including Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and the Society of Urologic Oncology Clinical Trials Consortium, Dr. Sankin spearheaded the development of a bladder cancer clinical trials program at Einstein. His translational research focuses on characterizing the tumor immune microenvironment of bladder tumors and the role of novel checkpoint molecules as relevant therapeutic targets. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals.</p><p>Dr. Sankin is board certified and a member of the American Urological Association and the Society of Urologic Oncology.</p>

<p class="p1">The major focus of research in the Ross laboratory is to identify novel mechanisms of kidney injury occurring in HIV-positive persons and his laboratory uses in vitro and murine models to generate new strategies to prevent and treat kidney diseases. Dr. Ross also works with members of the International Network for Strategic Initiatives in Global HIV Treatment (INSIGHT) to perform research on kidney disease in the context of large international HIV treatment trials.</p>
<p class="p1"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ongoing NIH-funded projects:</span></strong></p>
<p class="p1"><strong>Mechanisms by which antiretroviral medications protect kidneys from HIV-induced injury:</strong></p>
<p class="p1">Though combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) is efficacious in preventing and treating HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN), the mechanisms by which these medications protect the kidney from the deleterious effects of HIV are poorly understood.&nbsp;&nbsp;We are performing studies using transgenic animal models and molecular and genomic techniques to identify novel pathways by which ART protect the kidneys from HIV.&nbsp;&nbsp;Moreover, we have exciting data suggesting that these medications may protect kidneys from non-viral mediated forms of kidney injury, including diabetic kidney disease.</p>
<p class="p1"><strong>The role of APOL1 polymorphisms in promoting HIV-induced kidney injury:</strong></p>
<p class="p1">Polymorphisms in the APOL1 gene account for most of the excess risk of African-Americans to non-diabetic kidney disease and HIV-associated kidney disease in particular. In our studies, we are using genetically modified human kidney cells to perform innovative proteomic, and genomic studies to identify novel mechanisms by APOL1 genetic variants predispose to HIV-induced kidney injury.&nbsp;</p>

Biography

<p>Dr. Michael Ross received his MD degree at NYU and completed internal medicine residency training at Duke University, followed by Nephrology Fellowship training at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. While he was on the faculty in the Mount Sinai Division of Nephrology from 2001-17, he served as Nephrology Fellowship Program Director from 2004-2015. He became Chief of Nephrology at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center from 2014-2017, where he helped establish the only VA Kidney Transplant Program in the northeastern US. Dr. Ross became Chief of the Division of Nephrology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in 2017 where he is currently Chief of Nephrology and Professor of Medicine and Developmental and Molecular Biology.&nbsp;</p><p>Dr. Ross has served in several national/international leadership roles for the American Society of Nephrology and other organizations, served as Deputy Editor of Kidney International, and is currently Nephrology Section Editor of the American College of Physicians Medical Knowledge and Self-Assessment Program. Dr. Ross was also the recipient of the 2021 American Society of Nephrology Distinguished Leader Award. The major focus of Dr. Ross&rsquo; research program is to identify novel mechanisms of HIV-induced kidney diseases and other forms of kidney injury.
