<p>Mark Shlomovich, MD, is Director, Extracorporeal Liver Support and Director, Pediatric Critical Care Transport at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore and Assistant Professor, Pediatrics at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Shlomovich&rsquo;s clinical focus is on the care of critically ill children with abdominal organ failure, transplantation and post-surgical care. He also focuses on the safe transportation of critically ill children.</p><p>In 2006, Dr. Shlomovich earned his Bachelor of Science in biology from Towson University. He then attended University of Connecticut School of Medicine earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2010. His postgraduate training began at SUNY Downstate Medical Center with a four-year pediatric residency, where he was Chief Pediatric Resident in his final year. He then came to Children's Hospital at Montefiore for a pediatric critical care fellowship, which he completed in 2017.</p><p>Dr. Shlomovich&rsquo;s research interests are in the use of artificial liver support technology, as well as the care of children in liver failure before and after transplantation. In addition, he investigates the safety and efficiency of the transportation of critically ill children. He has shared his research through peer-reviewed journals and abstracts, and is an ad hoc reviewer for BMC Nephrology.</p><p>Dr. Shlomovich is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine. He is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics.</p>

<p>Dr. Shlomo Shinnar is a neurologist, pediatrician and epidemiologist. His expertise focuses on comprehensive epilepsy management, child neurology and epilepsy with a focus on long term studies&nbsp; the prognosis of childhood seizures disorders. He is also an experienced clinical trialist and is the co-director of the Einstein NeuroNEXT cener of Excellence for Clinical Trials in Neurology.<br /><br />Dr. Shinnar conducts research on a variety of topics relating to childhood seizures, including when to initiate and discontinue antiepileptic drug therapy, prognosis following a first seizure, and prognosis following discontinuation of medications in children with seizures.&nbsp;He is also interested in the comorbidities of epilepsy and its impact on chilren and families.&nbsp;He current studies focus on status epilepticus, a life-threatening condition of persistent continuous and unremitting brain seizure lasting longer than 30 minutes.&nbsp; He is also involved in research in autism, an increasingly common neurological condition in childhood.<br /><br />His current research focuses on the consequences of prolonged febrile seizures, the most common seizure seen in children and on the long term outcomes of childhood absence (petit-mal) seizures which are the most common form of epilepsy in children. He is also on the executive commitee of the recentlyfunded ESETT (Established Status Epilepticus Treatment Trial) trial which seeks to determine the optimal therapy for convulsive status epilepticus inchildren and adults when first line therapy with a benzodiazepine has failed.</p>
<p>Dr. Shinnar is the senior editor of the book <em>Childhood Seizures</em> and co-editor of the book <em>Febrile Seizures</em>. He has published over 185 original papers and over 125 reviews and chapters. He is the recipient of the prestigious Research Recognition Award of the American Epilepsy Society and the CURE&nbsp; research award. His continuing research on the Consequences of Prolonged Febrile Seizures in Children (FEBSTAT) study was recently recognized with the prestigious Javits award by the NINDS.<br /><br /></p>

<p>Melinda S. Sharkey, MD, is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at Montefiore. She specializes in the operative and nonoperative treatment of general pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal problems, including traumatic injuries, as well as congenital and developmental disorders. Her practice particularly focuses on the surgical treatment of bone deformities, foot deformities, limb length discrepancies, and metabolic bone diseases. </p><p>Dr. Sharkey received her Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry in 1999 at Wellesley College. In 2004, she received her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Sharkey completed an internship in General Surgery and a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California San Francisco from 2004 to 2009. <p>Dr. Matthew Shaines completed a medical degree at SUNY Downstate Medical Center - Brooklyn and an internal medicine residency at Montefiore/Einstein. He was then recruited to the Einstein faculty at Montefiore and became one of the initial group of hospitalists who founded the Teaching Hospitalist Program at Montefiore in 2004.</p>
<p>Dr. Shaines has served as Assistant Director of the Hospitalist Service, managing the Moses Teaching Hospitalist Program; founding Director of the Medicine Consult Service, creating a dedicated medicine consult rotation for the housestaff, with a mission of high quality service and education on topics pertaining to consultative and perioperative medicine; Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program, serving as a liaison between the program and the Division of Hospital Medicine. In 2018 he was appointed as the Associate Chief of Hospital Medicine for Education.</p>
<p>His teaching and academic interests are in clinical reasoning, quality improvement and faculty development. He serves as the lead vignette reviewer for Montefiore&rsquo;s annual Division of General Internal Medicine/Division of Hospital Medicine SGIM/SHM scholarly review process, which helps to review and critique abstracts, posters and oral presentations prior to submission.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Theresa Serra, MD, joined the CHAM hospitalist division in 2014 after working as a pediatric hospitalist at New York Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital. Her interests include clinical research and medical education. She has conducted an IRB approved retrospective chart review examining readmission rates in pediatric patients diagnosed with osteomyelitis. Dr. Serra is currently developing a medical Spanish curriculum for faculty members in order to improve communication between patients, families and providers. Along with Courtney McNamara, MD, Dr. Serra is a co-leader of a multidisciplinary committee dedicated to standardizing and improving quality of care for patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of failure to thrive. Dr. Serra is also working on an initiative to identify vaccine delinquency in the inpatient setting through the use of SMART reports.</p> <p class="MsoNormal">Dr. Serra is also collaborating with Lindsey Douglas, MD, MSCR, in an IRB approved quality improvement (QI) project to improve transition-of-care communication between hospitalists and primary care providers and to facilitate the establishment of medical homes. Dr. Serra is also a member of a subcommittee that leads monthly journal clubs/case conferences for pediatric hospitalists.</p>

Biography

<p>Jacob F. Schulz, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who provides comprehensive pediatric orthopedic care with an emphasis on spinal deformity, neuromuscular disease and trauma. He has a particular interest in the growing spine, with experience using the vertical expandable titanium rib (VEPTR) device and vertebral tethering through a thoracoscopic approach. At our Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery.</p><p>He served both his internship and residency at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia where he was honored with the Frank Hammond Sivitz and Chief Resident Teaching Awards in 2011. During his residency, he traveled to Neustadt, Germany to study spine deformity at the Schoen Clinic, and to San Pedro Sula in Honduras to help CURE International provide world class orthopedic care to children. Dr. Schulz completed his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at Rady Children&rsquo;s Hospital-San Diego, ranked second by <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report</em> in 2012.</p><p>Dr. Schulz&rsquo;s research has been published in The Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics (JPO) and presented at several national meetings. He is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA).</p>

<p>Elayna Rubens, MD, is Co-Director, Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring Service at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Rubens&rsquo;s primary clinical focus is performing intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring to enhance the safety of surgeries that may affect the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in biology and neurobiology from Cornell University in 1998, Dr. Rubens earned her Doctor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Rubens completed her neurology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2007, where she was Chief Resident in her final year. She went on to complete a clinical neurophysiology fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in 2009.</p><p>Dr. Rubens&rsquo;s research focuses on enhancing neurophysiologic monitoring techniques to improve the safety of surgeries involving the nervous system. Her research also involves using clinical evoked potential testing and electroencephalography to improve neurologic patient care, particularly in the critical care setting. She has shared her work through numerous peer-reviewed publications and invited presentations.</p><p>Dr. Rubens is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is a Fellow of the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society and member of the American Epilepsy Society and the American Academy of Neurology.</p>

Stephanie Rand, DO, is the Program Director for Montefiore Einstein&rsquo;s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency and an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine. She is the director of Montefiore Einstein&rsquo;s prosthetic and orthotic services, practicing general rehabilitation medicine, and musculoskeletal medicine, including osteopathic manipulative treatments.<br /><br />Dr. Rand received her Bachelor of Arts in anthropology at New York University in 2006. She earned her Doctor of Osteopathy in 2010 at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed a traditional rotating internship at Nassau University Medical Center in 2011, followed by a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Montefiore in 2014.<br /><br />Dr. Rand&rsquo;s published research explores the effective use of 3-dimensional (3D) printing for prostheses, the integration of alternative medicine into primary care, and graduate medical education trends and signaling. <p>Raminder Parihar, MD, is Director, Neuromodulation at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Parihar evaluates and treats patients with different movement disorders. She is also largely involved in evaluating patients for candidacy for deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for the treatment of different movement disorders and initiating and following up stimulation programming.</p><p>After obtaining her Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences from the City College of New York in 2007, Dr. Parihar completed her Doctor of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in 2009. She then came to Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she completed an internship in medicine in 2010 and her residency in adult neurology in 2013, where she was Chief Resident in her final year. Dr. Parihar completed a fellowship in movement disorders at Harvard/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2014.</p><p>Dr. Parihar&rsquo;s research focuses on gait disorders and how they can predict cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease. She also studies the impact of deep brain stimulation in improving the quality of life in patients with movement disorders. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed book chapters and publications, and she has shared her work through lectures and platform and abstract presentations.</p><p>Dr. Parihar is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Movement Disorders Society and the American Medical Association (AMA). In 2023, Dr. Parihar was a recipient of the Marquis Who's Who in America Award.</p>

<p>Katherine O&rsquo;Connor, MD, is an Associate Director in the Division of Hospital Medicine and an Attending Pediatric Hospitalist at Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. O&rsquo;Connor joined Montefiore in 2007.</p><p>Dr. O&rsquo;Connor received her Bachelor of Arts in Cognitive Neuroscience in 1999 from Harvard University. In 2003, she received her Medical Doctorate from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. O&rsquo;Connor attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 2003 to 2007 where she completed an internship and residency in pediatrics.</p><p>Dr. O&rsquo;Connor is an advocate for patient and family comfort. Her research and quality improvement efforts are focused on pain control, topical anesthetic use for venipuncture and improving the patient experience. She is currently working on a study to help educate families about firearm injury prevention in the inpatient setting.
