<p>Mona Gangar, MD, MS, is Director. Medical Students; Co-director, Pediatric thyroid program; Faculty Advisor, ENT interest group and Assistant Professor of Otorhinolaryngology&ndash;Head &amp; Neck Surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Her clinical interests are in all aspects of pediatric otorhinolaryngology with a focus on pediatric head and neck pathology, and special interests in pediatric thyroid disease, vascular anomalies, resident/medical student education and global health.</p><p>In 1999, Dr. Gangar received her Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from the University of California Los Angeles. She attended MCP Hahnemann University from 2000 to 2002, earning her Master of Science in medical science. She then attended New York Medical College to pursue her Doctor of Medicine degree, earning it in 2006. Her postdoctoral training included an otorhinolaryngology&ndash;head and neck surgery residency at Einstein from 2006 to 2011, followed by a yearlong fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Rady&rsquo;s Children&rsquo;s Hospital, which she completed in 2012.</p><p>Dr. Gangar&rsquo;s research focuses on all aspects of pediatric otorhinolaryngology. She has shared her work through publication in journals and podium and poster presentations.</p><p>Dr. Gangar is board certified and is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology&ndash;Head and Neck Surgery and the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology.</p>

<p>The maturation of GABA<sub>A</sub><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>receptor-mediated signaling from depolarizing to inhibitory is an age-related process controlled by cation chloride cotransporters, such as KCC2. As a result, GABA exerts dual functions, being an important neurotrophic factor during early development and the principal inhibitory neurotransmitter of the mature central nervous system. In our laboratory we have been investigating the age mechanisms through which early life stressors and seizures may disrupt the normal patterns of brain development, by disrupting the neurotrophic effects of GABA. We are also studying methods to reverse these adverse processes. Furthermore, we are very interested in understanding how epileptogenesis proceeds in the developing brain and what is the specific role of GABA<sub>A</sub><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>receptors in this process.</p>
<p>To better understand the pathophysiology and design better methods to treat catastrophic early life epilepsies, we are developing and studying new models of early life epilepsy. These include models of symptomatic infantile spasms that recapitulate most of the features of the human condition. Several projects are under way to (a) elucidate the pathophysiology of infantile spasms, and (b) conduct preclinical trials to find better treatments for spasms and the associated comorbidities. Our studies have provided preclinical evidence for new potential treatments with disease modifying properties for these early life epileptic encephalopathies, such as mTOR inhibitor, carisbamate and a new vigabatrin analog.</p>
<p>Post-traumatic epilepsy is a common consequence of traumatic brain injury leading to high morbidity and morbidity. Our lab is participating in an international multicenter preclinical consortium, EpiBioS4Rx, leading efforts to develop better therapies for post-traumatic epilepsy. We use a rodent model of traumatic brain injury to identify targets and test for better therapies, through a combination of expression studies, in vivo behavioral and electrophysiologic monitoring and therapy screening to identify antiepileptogenic compounds. Furthermore, through a separate project, we are looking into factors predicting epilepsy and behavioral outcomes after traumatic brain injury.</p>
<p>Genetic etiologies are often identified in patients with epilepsies. Our lab has been investigating genes involved in lissencephaly associated epilepsies and developmental disorders as well as Rett syndrome which is due to MeCP2 gene mutations. Through the use of mouse models we have been investigating genotype-phenotype correlations and mechanisms involved with the ultimate goal of testing therapies.</p>
<p>Students interested in these projects will gain exposure to a variety of<span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>in vivo</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>and<span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>in vitro</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>techniques that combine molecular biology<em>, in vivo</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>and<span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span><em>in vitro</em><span class="apple-converted-space">&nbsp;</span>electrophysiology, histological, and behavioral studies and will be involved in projects with direct translational relevance to the clinical practice, i.e. identification of novel therapies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr. Fornari earned his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn and completed his internship and residency in orthopedic surgery at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, where he was recognized as the outstanding chief resident with the Henry H. Banks award.&nbsp; He then completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at Rady Children&rsquo;s Hospital in San Diego.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Dr. Fornari&rsquo;s main focus and passion is the care of his patients and their families.&nbsp; Dr. Fornari&rsquo;s expertise is in the management of complex pediatric and adolescent hip disorders as well as pediatric and adolescent sports medicine.&nbsp; He has presented his research at numerous national meetings and has been published in major orthopedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Dr. Fornari has also volunteered overseas, working with Health Volunteers Overseas and Orthopedics Overseas to provide orthopedic surgical care and training in Malawi, Africa. &nbsp;He is actively involved in the education and training of medical students, residents, and pediatric orthopedic surgery fellows.&nbsp; Dr. Fornari is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA).</p>

Biography

<p>Eric D. Fornari, MD, is Co-Director of the Division of Pediatric Orthopedics at the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein. He is the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, as well as the Well-Being Officer for the department. Dr. Fornari is also Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Pediatrics at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Fornari is an orthopedic surgeon with a specialty in pediatric orthopedics. His clinical focus is on pediatric and adolescent hip disorders and sports medicine. He is passionate about patient care, clinical research and the advancement of the field of pediatric orthopedic surgery.</p><p>After completing his undergraduate training at Colgate University, Dr. Fornari went on to attend medical school at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where he graduated <em>magna cum laude</em> and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Tufts Medical Center in Boston where he was awarded the Henry H. Banks Award for the outstanding chief resident. He then went on to complete his fellowship in pediatric orthopedics and scoliosis at Rady Children&rsquo;s Hospital in San Diego, and later completed a fellowship in Bern, Switzerland, focusing on hip preservation surgery.</p><p>Dr. Fornari has a robust research portfolio. He is an active member of the International Perthes Study Group, serving as the Patient Reported Outcome Lead. He is also an active part of multicenter research with the International Hip Dysplasia Registry (IHDR) and SCFE Longitudinal International Prospective (SLIP) Registry, as well as the Pediatric Research in Sports Medicine Society&rsquo;s (PRiSM) Hip Research Interest Groups.</p><p>Dr. Fornari joined the faculty at Montefiore Einstein and the Children&rsquo;s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx, NY, in 2012. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has been heavily involved with the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) since starting his practice. He previously served on the Children&rsquo;s Orthopaedics in Underdeveloped Regions (COUR) Committee and, while chair of this committee, he led the transition to the Pediatric Orthopedic Global Outreach committee. He has also served on the Communications Committee as well as the Bylaws Committee. He is a founding member of PRiSM and has been active with a number of committees and research groups within the organization. He is also an active member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.</p><p>In 2023, Dr. Fornari was awarded the Angela Kuo Award by POSNA for his research on the impact of mental health on adolescents undergoing scoliosis surgery. He has won numerous awards and accolades, including being chosen as the Department of Orthopedic Surgery 2017 Attending of the Year by the graduating chief residents. <p>Dr. Cuomo received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine. She went on to complete a general surgery internship at Beth Israel Medical Center and an orthopedic surgery residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York. She then completed the Charles S. Neer, II, Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center.</p><p>A prolific author and speaker, Dr. Cuomo has published more than 40 scientific articles and 20 book chapters on the diagnosis and management of shoulder disorders, and she has made over 150 national and international scientific presentations. She currently serves as secretary of the editorial board of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and is a reviewer for many orthopedic journals.</p><p>The first female orthopedic surgeon to be elected to the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Association, its first woman president, and the first woman ever to serve as president of any subspecialty society in the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Frances Cuomo, MD, joined the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Montefiore in October 2016 as Chief of Shoulder and Elbow Service.</p>

<p>Dr. Lauren Crocco is an attending physician in orthopaedic surgery and Assistant Professor of orthopaedic surgery at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Crocco&rsquo;s clinical focus is on fractures and soft tissue injuries of the upper and lower extremities. These include fractures of the ankle, tibia, knee, femur, hip, wrist, forearm, elbow and humerus.&nbsp; She additionally manages soft tissue injuries of the extremities including sprains, strains and contusions. Her expertise also includes post traumatic deformity and infection.&nbsp; </p><p>After earning her Bachelor of Science in biology at Boston College in 2003, Dr. Crocco attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine for her medical school training. She earned her Doctor of Medicine in 2008 and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.&nbsp; She began her post graduate training at Montefiore Einstein completing an orthopaedic surgery residency in 2013. She then went on to Brigham and Women&rsquo;s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital to complete her Harvard orthopaedic trauma surgery fellowship. Finally, she completed a prestigious AO traveling trauma fellowship in Berlin, Germany in 2015. </p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:'Calibri',sans-serif;">Dr. Crocco&rsquo;s research areas of interest focus on the management of geriatric hip fractures as well as resident education. <p>Daniel J. Correa, MD, MSc, is a member to the research team for the Public Engagement Core of The Epilepsy Bioinformatics Study for Antiepileptogenic Therapy (EpiBioS4Rx), working with a consortium of researchers, clinicians, patient organization representatives, patients, and caretakers in TBI and Epilepsy to improve public involvement for future treatment trials. His clinical work at Montefiore Medical Center includes inpatient general neurology and epilepsy services, inpatient epilepsy monitoring, long term EEG monitoring of acutely ill patients. Additionally, he supports the NYC Health Hospitals (Jacobi and North Central Bronx) as an epilepsy attending in their clinical neurophysiology lab. Administratively, he serves as the Deputy Chief of Neurology at the Montefiore Medical Center. After Neurology residency at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, he served in the US Army Medical Corps advancing to the rank of Major and received numerous decorations and awards throughout 8 years of active duty service. His military assignments included the Deputy Chief and later Chief of the Neuroscience &amp; Rehabilitation Center, Dwight Eisenhower Army Medical Center (EAMC). At the EAMC he also participated in the clinical education of medical students, residents, and post-doctoral trainees; Neuroscience representative on the Institutional Review Board, and participated in growing a program of neuroscience research. His academic and research interests focus on the areas of traumatic brain injury and epileptogenesis in post-traumatic epilepsy. Under the mentorship of Drs. Solomon L. Mosh&eacute; and Nathalie Jett&eacute;, in 2019 he completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods through the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Clinical Research Training Program. His present work focuses on developing solutions for barriers in the recruitment and implementation of critical care and epilepsy clinical research.<br /><br />In his community outreach and volunteer efforts, Dr. Correa joined a Neurology mission to the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, and previously volunteered as Medical Translator for a Pediatric Cardiology mission to Guayaquil, Ecuador. In New York City he serves on the board of the New York Aikido Society (Bond Street Dojo), an organization dedicated to teaching principles of non-violence, conflict resolution and personal development. He hopes to continue to support local and international community efforts to bridge the community health gaps for underserved communities.</p>

Biography

<p>Daniel Jos&eacute; Correa, MD is Deputy Chief of Neurology at Montefiore and Assistant Professor of Neurology at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His clinical focuses include inpatient epilepsy monitoring, long-term EEG monitoring of acutely ill patients, and general neurology inpatient services.</p><p>Dr. Correa received his Bachelor of Science in biology at the University of Mary Washington in 2004. He continued his studies at Howard University College of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 2008. Dr. Correa completed his residency in neurology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in 2012. He fulfilled his army duty at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, departing in 2016 as Chief of the Neuroscience and Rehabilitation Center.</p><p>Dr. Correa came to Montefiore to complete a fellowship in neurophysiology and epilepsy in 2017. During this time, Dr. Correa worked in parallel to receive his Master of Science in clinical research methods at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which he completed in 2019.</p><p>Dr. Correa&rsquo;s research explores areas of traumatic brain injury and epileptogenesis in post-traumatic epilepsy. His work focuses on developing solutions for implementation barriers in critical care and epilepsy clinical research.</p><p>He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, NHMA, and the American Epilepsy Society. </p>
